The Coral Reef Project
In the last two years, students at Stratton Elementary have brought the ocean to school, creating coral reef ecosystems that are treasured and cared for by children of all ages.

We have four large coral reef tanks and seven other marine and jellyfish aquariums in classrooms and common areas around the school.  Each aquarium is a cherished part of the classroom and a vehicle for hands-on science learning.   The enthusasm that students show for this project permeates all areas of curriculum and is major part of their school experience.

We Need You!
Our coral reef ecosystems contain many rare and beautiful animals, including schools of tangs and angelfish, touchable sea cucmbers, urchins and starfish, and many different species of anemones and coral.  And all of this life depends on your help.

Stratton is a Title One school and our project is not funded by the school district.  It relies soley on donations from Mr. Rutherford, the local community, and reef aquarium enthusiasts from around the world.

We need donations from people like you to puchase the consumable supplies we need to keep our ecosystems alive.  By the end of the school year, we must raise $3000 to pay for salt, food, and chemicals to support our aquariums over the summer and into the fall.

Please Help Us!
Your gift will ensure that our project continues to provide deserving students with an experience of a lifetime.  Please check out our project's website  and our ongoing thread on  to learn more.

Thank you from the students of Stratton Elementary!

My students and I have been very excited about the recent activity on our fundraiser. We check it each morning now and its feels good that we have a people following and supporting our project.

We are always up to something new and I encourage people to check out our tread on Reef 2 Reef for the most recent updates.

We have two big things going on. On November 4th my project is taking 50 kids to the aquatic experience aquarium expo in Chicago. We're making paintings and presentations that will be featured at the convention. We are also launching a clownfish breeding program in our classroom. My student leaders and I learned how to breed marine fish over the summer and we now feel competent enough to expand this new part of our project to more students and classrooms. We're partnering with a research group at the U of I to learn more about aqua culture. Below are some photos related to our fish breeding efforts. All of the recent donations will go towards buying supplies for this new venture.

Thanks again to all of our supporters!

Great News!

The Coral Reef Project has made its fundraising goal for this summer. In the last two weeks, my students and I have held several bake sales at Sailfin Pets and our combined earnings have put us over our $3,000 goal.

My sincere thanks to all who have supported our project by donating or sharing this champaign on social media. We have already used the $3,000 to buy salt from our sponsor Tropic Marin to support our tanks through the summer and well into the 2016 school year.

We purchased a large supply of the best food out there, LRS Reef Frenzy, and had some money left over to buy other essentials like filters, chemical supplements and even some fish for our newer tanks.

Please continue to check my ongoing thread on Reef 2 Reef to thread for all of the cool things my project is doing over the summer.

Thanks again for your generous support, it truly does have a profound impact on the children of our community.

Thanks again to all of the generous people in our school, community and beyond who continue to support this project. Recently we kicked our fundraiser up a notch and had a bake sale at Sailfin Pet Store in Champaign. Kids got together and baked goodies the night before and on Saturday we had a blast chatting with other aquarium enthusiasts at our favorite store.

We're going to be there selling cookies and all kinds of yummy treats each Saturday in May from 12-4pm. We hope to see you there!

Our sincere thanks to all of the people who have donated to this important fundraiser. We are still far from our goal and I urge you to donate or share this link via social media.

The Coral Reef Project is an invaluable experience that not only teaches science but also promotes leadership and positive self esteem.

My student Nipun is one of the leaders of our project and exemplifies the accelerated social and academic growth that occurs when students are passionate about what they learn at school. He was recently a finalist for the Rising Star Award for his role on the Coral Reef Project. Nipun is well versed in the complex chemistry and biology concepts needed to care for our marine ecosystems and is able to teach what he knows to his peers. He is already planning on being a marine biologist (or a soccer star) when he grows up.

Your donation will help Nipun and other students like him to grow into the future science leaders of tomorrow.
