Help for the Children of Napoli: 2

Donation protected
UPDATE: Napoli Fundraiser 2017
Hello again! I'm excited to announce that on March 8th, 2017, I will be back in Naples, Italy to see the wonderful teachers and children at La Tenda! I have re-opened by GoFundMe page, except this year all donations will be going straight to Centro La Tenda. This money will help them run and maintain their program that keeps so many at risk youth off of the streets.

Last year while in Italy, it was decided on a metro platform in Scampia that the kids in Naples and the community of Westport needed to stay connected. So, this past Fall, the students in Westport and the students in Naples embarked on a cultural exchange program using monthly videos, drawings, lessons, even a box full of American goodies shipped to the napuletani. The program is designed to teach students the differences between Italy and the United States and the importance of helping others.

The Staples High School Italian Club (il Circolo Italiano), the Earthplace After School Enrichment Program, along with the rest of the Westport and Neopolitan communities have worked hard to teach and enrich the lives of our students.

The money that you donate this year will be given to La Tenda on Friday, March 9th. If you have any items or supplies that you would particularly like to purchase for La Tenda, please contact me!

Thank you for your help and love. In the past year we've been able to show thousands of people how important it is to learn and care about each other, even if we have thousands of miles between us. I'm excited to continue this voyage and share with you all the work that you've helped me start.

Original Post from Fall 2015:
Hello, All!

Thanks for visiting my GoFundMe site. My name is Jaime, and I'm a senior in High School in Westport Connecticut. In addition to being a student, I'm also a volunteer emergency medical technician (EMT) and Board member of my local ambulance corp. as well as an assistant teacher at a local non-profit nature center (and nursery school). I have been recognized for my work by the Daughters of the American Revolution , Westport Sunrise Rotary Club, and also as a recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award . My passion is people; without other people I wouldn't be where I am today. I've always wanted to help those abroad, but I could never figure out how until last year in my Italian class, we watched a movie called Ciao, Professore! , which depicted the hard life of a neopolitan child. I've thought about them ever since, and that's why in April I have planned a two week service trip with the International Volunteer's Headquarters (IVHQ)  in conjunction with the International Napoli Network (INN).

I will be traveling to Napoli, Italia (regione Campania) - where poverty is prevalant throughout the city. My project specifically will focus on i piccolini  (the little ones). Because of the rampant poverty, the children run the streets after school and often will become involved in gangs and other dangerous activities. I will be involved in a program that will offer these children an after school alternative; helping them with homework, playing games with them, teaching them English, and also learning from them about the Italian culture.

But I need your help.

Because of the great cost of the trip, I am looking for donors to help fund my dream of helping the children of Napoli. Any donations will be used for my program fees, airfare, insurance coverage, supplies while in Napoli, and for a course that will give me a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification . This amounts to several thousand dollars and I won't be able to do it without your help.

These children wake up and aren't sure where their next meal will be coming from, or how they'll be getting to school, or if they'll be getting to school. The situation is dire for i Napoletani, with children as young as elementary schoolers dropping out of school to work in shops, markets, or as peddlers in order to help create income for their families. One article describes a family where ten year old Gennaro wakes up at seven every morning in order to go to work, making one euro per hour - less than what his mother makes. Imagine going to work at ten years old in order to pay for your family's home, food, and life.

If you want to follow me on my journey, check in with my Volunteer Diary, where I'll keep you all updated on what's happening with the kids, my work, and how my colleagues and I will be helping our kids. I have been blessed with so many things in my life, so please help me give back to those who need it most. With your help I can travel to Napoli and help change the lives of the beautiful Neopolitan children, un sorriso alla volta.

Grazie mille! I thank you in advance - every little bit helps, even if you cannot donate money your support is welcomed with open arms as I begin this journey.
