Kyra Dobrenski needs help!

Kyra, a beautiful 10 year old girl who was in perfect health, recently had her life changed to become more perfect as God has intended for His glory. While we, on this side of heaven, can wonder aloud why certain things happen, we can always trust that God has higher purposes for our lives that go beyond our comprehension. God has found Kyra and the Dobrenski family worthy to answer this call to glorify His name through her sickness.

While running around, playing with, and bringing joy to her friends, as she has done for her entire life, Kyra collapsed. She was rushed to the hospital where doctor's labored to figure out what was going on. Symptoms were for a stroke, and 6 days later, when the symptoms returned with more intensity, 70% of the right side of her brain had become damaged. The decision to remove bone and tissue was  made in order to save her life, and for that we are thankful. This world remains a better place because of that decision.

If you are like me,  you struggle with how to process this event. What do I say? What can I do? The natural reaction is for everyone to run to the aid and encouragement of the Dobrenski family while in the midst of the crisis. For this, I know personally that Steve and Sarah (Kyra's parents) are forever grateful. The encouragement and the prayers were made evident in the peace that was given to them even in the midst of unimaginable trials. How is that possible? Pick up a Bible and read Philippians 4:6.

That said though....... we get back to life as we know it. We have jobs to attend, families to raise, people to serve, etc.  Ecclesiastes 1:11, talking about how "life" works states: "There is no remembrance of earlier things; and also of the later things which will occur. There will be for them no remembrance among those who will come later still."

This basically just means that we naturally, in our flesh, default to "out of sight, out of mind" as we wander through this journey of life.

The Dobrenski's will never be able to go back to how things were. They will, by God's grace, wake up everyday and with His strength, get through another day. Three years from now, we will occassionaly remember this trial and our hearts will go out to the Dobrenski's in that moment, and for that we praise the Lord. The Dobrenski's will be reminded every day.

I was able to talk to Steve and find out a little of what life will look like moving forward. While there are many unknowns still ahead, the initial ramifications have begun to hit home. In Steve's own words, this is some of his initial assessment:

"There is some medical equipment we will need to buy or rent like a wheelchair, ramp, etc.. but making a bathroom and shower accessible is the longer term plan based on her needs.  We also anticipate costs for the medications she will need for the next few years."

I am starting this page to allow people like myself to "do something." As time creates distance from this event, our strong urge to help lessens. I don't want that to be true. By raising funds to help the Dobrenski's adjust to their new life, our gift can help  them every day.  When I am working during the week, and the busyness of life has distracted my thoughts from their trial, at least my gift will be helping them day by day as Kyra's wheelchair heads up the ramp or her new shower gives her some joy. It's just a way to do something for them every single day, because their life will be different every day from here on out, and they need help.

I would like to start the goal at $25,000, but am and hoping and praying we can come together to crush that goal. I would like to see if we can all provide the home improvements that will be needed to make the changes needed for Kyra's care. I don't want to stop there though. Steve is a salesman (not shocking to those who know and love the man!) but you can imagine the challenge of trying to focus on work while caring for this situation. Sarah, she is super human. She will wear herself out serving Kyra and the rest of the family before you will hear her complain of how hard she has it. Can we try to also raise enough money to soften any other financial burden that might arise AND get them the money needed to take some time off as a family to maybe visit the places where they have made lifelong friends? I am calling you out Texas, and California.... as well as those in Switzerland, France, and Canada.  The Dobrenski's have touched all of our lives in fantastic ways...... let's take our turn to touch theirs!
