Help Kira Fight Brain Cancer

$382,885 of $600,000 goal

Raised by 8,421 people in 21 months
Kira is a 17 year old from San Diego who, in almost all ways, is a normal, healthy, active, and spirited teenager…with one big exception:

She is in the fight of her life with Franky, the name she’s given her inoperable brain tumor.

Despite learning of her condition only a few weeks away from her drivers test (and super excited because she worked all summer to save enough money to buy her own car), Kira remains very optimistic and happy.

In a very short 5-week period in late 2017, she went from normal and healthy teenager to a kid fighting a serious brain tumor.

It started as double vision which we thought was her eyesight since she had astigmatism. We figured she needed to update her prescription and visited the optometrist.

Within a few weeks It escalated from from vision issues, to occasional headaches, then some mild dizziness. Eventually she had such bad headaches and we started taking her to the doctor.

First to urgent care, then to the ER, then to her physician and finally to the ER again. In her final visit to the ER they suspected meningitis. The tests were negative and fortunately the Doctor ordered an MRI.

The MRI revealed a tumor attached to her brain stem. This prompted an immediate transfer to Rady Children's Hospital where further evaluation and additional scans revealed it to be cancerous.

Any funds raised will be used to cover medical bills and ultimately the clinical trials and experimental treatments that will be needed to fight this.

At this point her current treatment will be a combination chemotherapies and immunotherapy which will be supported by cancer fighting dietary changes. Treatments range from $17k to $32k per treatment. We have been advised that it will cost around $350k for one year of therapy and drugs.

You can keep up with her latest progress on her Facebook page.

**Currently..... The daily annoyance of double vision is solved by covering one of her eyes.

Quick update ( sorry for the delay) with more to come soon.

Kira finished radiation therapy in Mid May has been doing great since.... despite losing some hair. If you know her at all you know she turned hair loss into a positive and shaved the back of her head... not sure how to explain but it reminds me of the 80s skater girl look.

Anyway, she has been living a mostly normal life since then.

Now its time to continue the journey and fight the good fight. This coming Thursday we have a surgical consult for an upcoming biopsy on Monday. She had a new MRI today as well.

We have avoided the biopsy in the past due to risks, despite them being very minor, and the possibility of her losing any normal motor skills. Even a 5% chance didn't seem worth it when she has been feeling so good.

Does the risk outweigh the reward? We think so.... because the risk is small and the reward could be exponential. We are told that the biopsy could reveal many possibilities such as matches for chemo drugs, immunotherapy programs and maybe more.

We know that this type of cancer does not go without a fight and complacency is not an acceptable approach. As such, we move forward.

Thank you again for your support. Without you Kira would not be here today. For weekly and somtimes daily updates please follow her journey on facebook here :

Update - This week we meet with her Oncologist to make some decisions about next steps. Kira's balance has worsened since January yet her MRI's haven't changed that much (according to him). So we need to decide if radiation or a biopsy is the next step. More information once we find out what's happening.

For those who prefer alternative medicine you should know that we are doing anything and everything outside standard medicine as long as it does not harm. Things like CBD and other supplements are part of her daily routine.

Finally we have her "live" event on 4-20-19 in Encinitas / Del Mar California... so if you are anywhere nearby please come and say hello. We have a surf event in the morning and diner event in the evening. All details on her website helpkirafight.org.

This year the raffle also includes a one week stay at a beach house in San Diego as well as airfare for two. You don't have to be here to win the main raffle prizes listed. We will have a few other items in the raffle and silent auction that will require the winners to be physically present.

Last year was a massive success and we hope to see you there!

The year in review:
It's been just over a year since kira's diagnosis (DIPG) on 11-9-17 and our last checkup with her Oncologist was very positive. He is surprised and extremely happy with how well she is doing. She just finished her 14th intra-arterial chemo treatment and about to receive her 15th on January 8th. Right now she is in Cottonwood Arizona with her Grand Parents, visiting Jerome (an old mining town) and Sedona. Life is much slower in northern Arizona and a good break from School, Doctors and the normal hustle we are used to.
As we head into 2019 it's a time for reflection and thanks. Thank YOU for donating and supporting Kira. When she was first diagnosed we were told she had 3-6 months and here we are 13 months later still fighting. This is a fantastic place to be and we are very thankful and grateful .

If you have a Facebook account, please follow her at https://fb.me/kirascancerupdates we post regular updates and pictures there for you to follow her daily / weekly updates. I also have information about her treatment plan, why it's so expensive and why we chose it.

At this point we have used nearly $300k of the money raised (around $15k to $30k per treatment depending on scans etc). We are in the initial planning stages of planning her next fundraiser in San Diego (you are invited). Last year we held a surf contest and evening auction that raised about $60k . We are planning a similar style of event for late Feb/ Early March. Once we have official dates I will send out another update with details for you.

In this update have included a couple of photos from her holiday in Cottonwood and a Q&A video she did with her mom. This may be redundant if you follow her on Facebook but I know that some folks don't "do Facebook" so I have added this as a backup.

I just want to re-emphasize how important you are! ... YOU are the reason she has and will continue to have the opportunity to experience life, to fight and to be a teenager. Thank you very much and Happy Holiday / Happy New Year.

Overdue Update & New Documentary..... Well not a documentary per se but Kira decided she wanted to film her experience using her phone (20min). I also included some amazing photos from Fathers day... she actually made it out for a surf session (first time since diagnosis). She just finished her 11th treatment and has battled 9 months past diagnosis, beating all the odds (the stuff docs tell you) . She starts school next week, senior in high school, and turns 17 next month. We have plans to attend the WSL contest (Surf) in Lemoore CA for her birthday weekend. I just want to emphasize how important you are! ... you are the reason she has and will continue to have these opportunities to experience life, to fight and to be a teenager. Thank you. If you have a Facebook account, please follow her at fb.me/kirascancerupdates ....
