Kira is a 16yo girl and despite learning of her condition (inoperable brain tumor) only a few days ago... very optimistic and happy.

She was only a few weeks away from her drivers test and super excited because she worked all summer to save enough money to buy her own car. Unfortunately she can't see well enough to do so.

In a very short 5-week period she went from normal and healthy teenager to a kid fighting a serious brain tumor.

It started as double vision which we thought was her eyesight since she had astigmatism. We figured she needed to update her prescription and visited the optometrist.

Within a few weeks It escalated from from vision issues, to occasional headaches, then some mild dizziness. Eventually she had such bad headaches and we started taking her to the doctor.

First to urgent care, then to the ER, then to her physician and finally to the ER again. In her final visit to the ER they suspected meningitis. The tests were negative and fortunately the Doctor ordered an MRI.

The MRI revealed a tumor attached to her brain stem. This prompted an immediate transfer to Rady Children's Hospital where further evaluation and additional scans revealed it to be cancerous.

Any funds raised will be used to cover medical bills and ultimately the clinical trials and experimental treatments that will be needed to fight this.

At this point her current treatment will be a combination chemotherapies and immunotherapy which will be supported by cancer fighting dietary changes. Treatments range from $17k to $32k per treatment. We have been advised that it will cost around $350k for one year of therapy and drugs.

**Currently..... The daily annoyance of double vision is solved by covering one of her eyes.

ira is an avid surfer and after turning 16 she has been excited to get her drivers license. When asked what she wants to do when she is better the answer is always the same.....

"I want to get my license and I want to surf again." - Kira

The year in review:
It's been just over a year since kira's diagnosis (DIPG) on 11-9-17 and our last checkup with her Oncologist was very positive. He is surprised and extremely happy with how well she is doing. She just finished her 14th intra-arterial chemo treatment and about to receive her 15th on January 8th. Right now she is in Cottonwood Arizona with her Grand Parents, visiting Jerome (an old mining town) and Sedona. Life is much slower in northern Arizona and a good break from School, Doctors and the normal hustle we are used to.
As we head into 2019 it's a time for reflection and thanks. Thank YOU for donating and supporting Kira. When she was first diagnosed we were told she had 3-6 months and here we are 13 months later still fighting. This is a fantastic place to be and we are very thankful and grateful .

If you have a Facebook account, please follow her at we post regular updates and pictures there for you to follow her daily / weekly updates. I also have information about her treatment plan, why it's so expensive and why we chose it.

At this point we have used nearly $300k of the money raised (around $15k to $30k per treatment depending on scans etc). We are in the initial planning stages of planning her next fundraiser in San Diego (you are invited). Last year we held a surf contest and evening auction that raised about $60k . We are planning a similar style of event for late Feb/ Early March. Once we have official dates I will send out another update with details for you.

In this update have included a couple of photos from her holiday in Cottonwood and a Q&A video she did with her mom. This may be redundant if you follow her on Facebook but I know that some folks don't "do Facebook" so I have added this as a backup.

I just want to re-emphasize how important you are! ... YOU are the reason she has and will continue to have the opportunity to experience life, to fight and to be a teenager. Thank you very much and Happy Holiday / Happy New Year.

Please follow her for regular updates -

Overdue Update & New Documentary..... Well not a documentary per se but Kira decided she wanted to film her experience using her phone (20min). I also included some amazing photos from Fathers day... she actually made it out for a surf session (first time since diagnosis). She just finished her 11th treatment and has battled 9 months past diagnosis, beating all the odds (the stuff docs tell you) . She starts school next week, senior in high school, and turns 17 next month. We have plans to attend the WSL contest (Surf) in Lemoore CA for her birthday weekend. I just want to emphasize how important you are! ... you are the reason she has and will continue to have these opportunities to experience life, to fight and to be a teenager. Thank you. If you have a Facebook account, please follow her at ....

Long overdue update for you (and thanks). Bottom line, its working. We just returned memorial day weekend from a full week in Mexico. It was Kira's 2nd PET scan (which measures tumor activity) and her 8th treatment since being diagnosed on 11-8-17. Not only is she doing better (better vision, balance and speech) but her PET scan shows ongoing improvements.

You are the reason she is doing so well. As you may know Mexico is the only place unrestricted by FDA "thinking" but still uses FDA approved drugs.

Kira has been and will continue to beat the odds thanks to you. I really hope that you are also following her on facebook for more frequent updates. Here is the address again in case you aren't:

Her next treatment is on 6-26-18. Additionally we have had a few meeting with the oncologists here in San Diego and they agree that this is going well and view the MRI and treatment information on a regular basis.

Thanks again. Talk soon

It's PET scan week. Leaving home at 2am makes for a grumpy kid but still tolerates this better than I would (video attached). Tuesday & Wednesday is a combination of MRI and PET scans to learn more about her tumor. Doctors suspect her treatments are working very well and to be certain they want details that only a PET scan can provide. We will post daily updates on her page at . Thank you again for your ongoing support.
