Kira is a 16yo girl and despite learning of her condition (innoperable brain tumor) only a few days ago... very optimistic and happy.

She was only a few weeks away from her drivers test and super excited because she worked all summer to save enough money to buy her own car. Unfortunately she can't see well enough to do so.

In a very short 5-week period she went from normal and healthly teenager to a kid fighting a serious brain tumor.

It started as double vision which we thought was her eyesight since she had astigmatism. We figured she needed to update her prescription and visited the optometrist.

Within a few weeks It escalated from from vision issues, to occasional headaches, then some mild dizzyness. Eventually she had such bad headaches and we started taking her to the doctor.

First to urgent care, then to the ER, then to her physician and finally to the ER again. In her final visit to the ER they suspected meningitis. The tests were negative and fortunately the Doctor ordered an MRI.

The MRI revealed a tumor attached to her brain stem. This prompted an immediate transfer to Rady Childrens Hospital where further evaluation and additional scans revealed it to be cancerous.

Any funds raised will be used to cover medical bills and ultimately the clinical trials and experimental treatments that will be needed to fight this.

At this point her current treatment will be a combination chemo therapies and immunotherapy which will be supported by cancer fighting dietary changes. Treatments range from $17k to $32k per treament. We have been advised that it will cost around $350k for one year of therapy and drugs.

You can keep up with her latest progress on her Facebook page.

**Currently..... The daily annoyance of double vision is solved by covering one of her eyes.

ira is an avid surfer and after turning 16 she has been excited to get her drivers license. When asked what she wants to do when she is better the answer is always the same.....

It's PET scan week. Leaving home at 2am makes for a grumpy kid but still tolerates this better than I would (video attached). Tuesday & Wednesday is a combination of MRI and PET scans to learn more about her tumor. Doctors suspect her treatments are working very well and to be certain they want details that only a PET scan can provide. We will post daily updates on her page at . Thank you again for your ongoing support.

New years update. Hopefully you are following Kira on Facebook and you already know what I am about to share here. (If not please follow her on Two big news items, 1 - Her surf contest / fundraiser was very successful, the community rallied and she had a fantastic day. I have included a link to a video that one of the volunteer photographers created. 2 - We received positive news during her last treatment. The doctors suspect her tumor to be nearly dead and have ordered a PET scan to confirm. We return Feb 12th for the entire week and remain cautiously optimistic. Thank you again for your ongoing support.

So we just returned from Mexico ( an adventure this time) and are planning a fundraising event for 1-20-18. If you happen to be in San Diego please join us, you can get more information at It's a 2-part deal, surf contest by day and music / food by night.

Mexico was different this time, we had treatment on 1-3-18 but decided to get there a couple days early for new years and bring more family. This allowed Kira to have a little fun there while she was feeling well rather than rushing straight into treatments.

On the way back our flight was cancelled and we had to wait 15hrs for the next available flight. Normal healthy people would probably hang out at the airport. We couldn't really do that with Kira being so weak and sick. Fortunately there is an airport hotel within walking distance and we were able to get a room for $90. It was a little cramped but Kira got some much needed rest while we waited for our flight. Never a dull moment. Happy New Year to you and thanks again for your continued support.
