On Wednesday July 4, Trevor suffered a severe, completely unanticipated stroke as a result of a blood clot to his basilur artery (at his brain stem). The brain stem controls basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. After a miracle phone call by his amazing 3 year-old daughter Molly to Devon, which certainly saved his life, he was eventually life flighted to INOVA Fairfax Hospital. After administration of tPA, which was successful in breaking up the clot, he then had to undergo emergency surgery on July 5 to remove part of his skull to allow room for swelling. This procedure and its recovery is incredibly complex and, though he is not out of the woods, Trevor is now showing signs of progress that completely shock and surprise us, and doctors are very hopeful about recovery; but there will be a long and arduous road ahead. Trevor still needs incredibly nuanced care and faces hurdles that may as yet be unforeseen. Despite all this, Devon and his other family and friends are completely marveling at his current miraculous healing and cheering him on as we hope for more. Trevor has a wife and two beautiful daughters (ages 3 and 1) to return to and, knowing what an absolutely dedicated, caring, involved, happy and loving husband and father he is, we know he is fighting hard to come back to us.

To all the McCabes friends, family and supporters,

A lot has happened since the last update! Trevor received incredible, intense care at Encompass Health rehab. He graduated their program Friday August 3rd after two weeks there and - upon his insistence! - was allowed to go home to continue to heal with Devon and Molly and Maggie by his side. He looks forward to more independence while still receiving near-daily in-home therapy. Though the road ahead can still at times feel long, and it will definitely be arduous, Trevor and Devon are hoping for and expecting a full recovery.

Updates may continue to be made here with any major change or progress, but until then, “thank you” to each of you doesn’t seem nearly enough. You have carried this family through the worst time of their life in the most practical way and they, along with all their loved ones, are more grateful than words for your love and support.

Hey everyone,

We continue to be completely amazed at Trevor’s progress. The past 14 days have been such a roller coaster, but by far we are hitting this two week “anniversary” with so much gratefulness. Trevor’s speech has improved dramatically, as well as his ability to walk (for which he receives daily PT in the hospital). He is no longer in the ICU and got his head drainage tube removed. His heart procedure went great; Dr. Thompson was and continues to be amazing!

Trevor is still struggling to swallow. He is receiving therapy for this as well but it continues to be a hurdle. He obviously can’t eat or drink so he’s still on his feeding tube. We are desperately hoping to make progress in this area. All Trevor wants is orange juice!! Haha. (But...not haha. ;))

Devon and Trevor were also advised that Trevor will hopefully be moved to inpatient rehab very soon — potentially in the next several days! They have chosen a facility they are excited about that will allow Devon to stay and the girls to visit as much as they want. Possibly the highest hardship right now is not being together as a whole family. Devon and Trevor miss their girls so much and long to be reunited as soon as possible.

Devon and Trevor are taking things one day, sometimes one hour, at a time. But they realize how much they have to be grateful for, not least of which is your incredibly generous support. Thank you all.

Friends,

The past two days have been full of little and big victories! Trevor has met with the cardiologist who will repair the hole in his heart (most likely responsible for allowing the clot to go to the brain), the only person in the U.S. who does this surgery. The procedure is scheduled for Tuesday and everyone is totally peaceful about it. After this, we will have a much clearer picture of what is to come in terms of rehab.

Trevor has also had his head bandage removed, is planning on getting the drainage tube out of the back of his head very soon, is getting better and better at his breathing exercises (and breathing still totally on his own), and is receiving physical therapy to help with swallowing and walking, among other motor skills. Trevor got out of bed and took a walk outside of his room using a walker with the help of his PT! This was a sight that was literally impossible to imagine on Monday. We are all blown away.

Thank you all for your support, which has dramatically lightened the mental load over the past nine days. We are surrounded by a strong a loving community and continue to all cheer Trevor on together to full recovery.

An update from Devon:

I am overjoyed to announce that Trevor has been off the ventilator for almost 24 hours now

He is an incredible fighter who hasn’t let his difficulty with swallowing, speaking, or controlling his movements get him down. We had a long exhausting night, but nevertheless he has been all smiles today. And like the true champ he is, he’s already gotten out of bed to the chair.

The gifts, well wishes, positive thoughts, and prayers have meant the world to us. To feel our community rally around us during this time has been so humbling. Thank you for supporting us through all means: financial, emotional, and even physical. We love you

Oh, and you can catch Trevors amazing story of survival on the 5pm and 6:45 NBC4 news :)
