Hi, my siblings and I have decided to start a GoFundMe for our incredible mom, Nikki Smith.
This year our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast. After many different tests and procedures, the doctors determined the cancer was caught very early and she can start treatment before it spreads into other areas. A few weeks after discovering the cancer in her left breast, they found another mass in her right breast that her initial mammogram did not pick up and was discovered through one of her MRI scans. She will now have to go through all the same tests and procedures for the new mass and incur double the expenses.
Her procedures so far have included multiple mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, MRI scans, and genetic testing. Many tests were repeated in order to ensure a correct diagnosis. Coming in the next few weeks, she will be having a partial mastectomy of her left breast and will go through at least five weeks of radiation therapy. Following that, they will continue following up with the left breast and begin making plans for the right breast.
Our mom has been very brave and has had a positive outlook throughout it all but has felt extreme stress financially. She currently works over 50 hours a week to support her family. She is a single mother with four kids: Abby, Alex, Bryanna, and Aiden. Everyone who knows her, knows she is a selfless, loving person who would bend over backwards to make those around her happy.
Although our mom does have health insurance, her deductible and out of pocket expenses are very high, at $10,000 each year. She has nearly met her $10,000 deductible for 2018 already, and it will automatically reset beginning 2019. After the deductible is met, the coverage that the insurance provides will only be a portion of the total cost of treatment. Our goal is to raise $30,000 to help limit her financial burden while she's also dealing with the emotional stresses of having a breast cancer diagnosis.
We’re extremely hopeful that her treatments will work in getting rid of the cancer and are hoping to do anything we can to help her physically, emotionally, and financially. February 4th: hi everyone! i get a lot of questions about my mom and how she’s doing, so i wanted to give everyone a little update! her partial mastectomy went incredibly well, her doctor was able to remove all of the cancer and she recovered quickly. she begins radiation TODAY! originally she was scheduled for five weeks of radiation, monday-friday and thankfully that was reduced to only four weeks. please keep her in your thoughts and prayers today as she begins. we are hoping she feels peace and comfort during radiation, and minimal negative side effects and fatigue.
