Helping Hands for Heidi

$17,377 of $40,000 goal

Raised by 267 people in 5 months
Heidi, a much loved Kindergarten teacher, suffered a tragic brain injury in February 2017, putting her in a coma for months. More than 10 months later, she is finally coming home. But Heidi will need a huge amount of help as she continues her recovery. Heidi has extremely limited mobility and functionality as a result of her brain injury. At present she is unable to care for herself in any way and needs total assistance with even the simplest of daily tasks. Heidi needs 24 hour supervision. Her insurance does not cover this. Heidi also needs physical, occupational and speech therapy so she can continue to improve. She needs transportation to and from appointments. She is on a dozen different medications and a feeding tube. She needs medical equipment and supplies. All of these things cost a lot of money.  Heidi's family has already incurred tens of thousands of dollars in medical expenses and this number is expected to drastically increase now that Heidi will be at home with very little support from insurance. Even in a best-case scenario, Heidis recovery is going to take years, and she will likely need some type of care or assistance for the rest of her life. Meanwhile, the costs will continue to accumulate. Heidi's quality of care, and ultimately her quality of life and chances for recovery, depend in large part on how much we can fundraise. Heidi's family will continue to do everything in their power to help her, but they do not have the resources to pay for everything that Heidi needs. $40,000 is our initial goal, but in the long term, Heidi will probably need a lot more than that. If this fundraiser is successful, we will increase our goal so we can do even more for Heidi. Your contribution will go toward: -Hiring caretakers to assist Heidi in the home -Paying for transportation to doctor's appointments -Bringing therapists to work with Heidi at home - Paying for ocassional private duty nursing care when needed - Paying for medicine, supplies and medical equipment, including a hospital bed, a Hoyer lift, and a custom-made wheelchair - Paying for hospital and rehab bills that have already been incurred - Keeping up with Heidi's pre-existing financial obligations, debts, taxes, bills and expenses while she is unable to work and earn money Everyone who knows Heidi knows what a wonderful, generous and caring person she is.   All her life she has put others before herself. Now it's time for us to return the favor. Please donate and make a difference in the life of someone who has made a difference in the lives of so many others. Thank you so much for your support! It is truly appreciated.

It is with a very heavy heart that I share the sad news that Heidi passed away yesterday from respiratory failure after being admitted to the hospital last Thursday for other problems she was having. Thanks to your donations, she had gotten to enjoy almost 4 months at home with the best care possible.

The money that is still left from this fundraiser will be used to pay for Heidi's remaining bills and obligations. If there is anything left after that, it will be donated to a scholarship fund that we are working on setting up in Heidi's honor.

This is certainly not the outcome we had hoped for, but please know that your donations made Heidi's last few months on Earth much happier and more comfortable than they would have been otherwise. Heidi's family and I will forever be grateful for your amazing genorosity. Thank you so much for helping our precious angel.

It's hard to believe, but it's only one week away from the one year anniversary of the surgery that caused Heidi's brain injury and other devestating medical problems. A year ago, Heidi and I could never have imagined the ordeal she was about to go through and is still going through. But I'm so grateful that Heidi is alive and conscious and gradually getting better and better in many ways.

I'm also grateful for the amazing outpouring of support we have received from so many people. In the first month since we launched this GoFundMe campaign, we raised a whopping $14,000 toward our $40,000 goal! This money has made Heidi's first month back home so much easier and less stressful.

However, in the past few weeks the donations have finally started to dry up. There have been a lot of days where no money has come in at all. I hate asking for money over and over, but it really does make a huge difference in the quality of care we can provide to Heidi.

If you already donated to the campaign, I am not asking you to donate a second time. What I am asking is for you to share the campaign on your Facebook page with a short personal note asking your friends to help Heidi if they are able to. Let's see how much we can raise in the next week before the anniversary of Heidi's surgery on February 15th.

Thank you again for your amazing support! It means so much to us!

Sincerely,

Mike Pesa (Heidi's husband)

I want to share the good news that Heidi finally came home to her mother's house last night! Your genorous donations helped make this possible. In less than a week, we have already raised over $8,600 for Heidi! We are more than 1/5th of the way to our $40,000 goal. Thank you so much!

Expenses are already starting to rack up, so please continue to spread the word about this fundraiser. Meanwhile, I want to also let you know that we have a site on CaringBridge.org to update Heidi's friends and family about how she is doing. If you know Heidi personally, please email me at mike.pesa@gmail.com or PM me on Facebook. Tell me how you know Heidi and I will send you the link to her CaringBridge page.

Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Mike Pesa (Heidi's husband)

Thank you so much for all your amazing support! In less than three days, we have already raised more than 10% of our $40,000 goal! That's incredible!

Heidi is expected to go home within the next two weeks. We just found out that we will need to pay out of pocket (no help from insurance at all) for her to be transported by ambulance to every doctor's appointment at a cost of about $1,000 per appointment! We are looking into alternatives but she can't be transported by wheelchair because she can't get from the wheelchair to the examining table without a Hoyer lift (which doctors' offices do not have).

Without your donations, I don't know what we would do. You are already making such in important difference in Heidi's life. Please spread the word so we can continue to get Heidi the help she needs!
