My Life Was Changed Forever

On July 21, 2016, five days after my 45th birthday, I had a heart attack. I went to the hospital and had an angiogram where it was discovered that I have genetic coronary artery disease. They found that I had four blockages in arteries around my heart. One of which blocked 90% of my right artery! They placed stents to open the blockages and I began a regimen of medications to try and prevent future blockages.

On January 22, 2018, a few days after having a severe case of the flu, I felt extreme pain in my chest and both of my arms went numb. I knew I was having another heart attack. I rushed to the hospital and had emergency angioplasty. My cardiologist determined that the flu caused an inflammatory response in my heart and arteries which then caused occlusions around two of the stents, blocking blood flow. This caused a blood clot to form and block 100% of my right artery. They placed ANOTHER stent, saving my life again. I am grateful, yet I am deeply concerned.

Forging A New Path

I am clean and sober over 16 years, I don’t smoke, and I’ve lived a plant based diet for nearly 5 years. Even with the prescribed medications and my clean lifestyle, I am still at risk of having complications with my stents due to the long term effects of the two heart attacks, arterial scarring and inflammation, and potential new blockages. My goal is to receive allogeneic mesenchymal adult stem cells to treat the damage and inflammation in my arteries and my heart. Unfortunately, the treatment is not covered by insurance.

Research is showing that allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are having amazing results in treating various ailments and diseases. Specifically for cardiovascular disease, MSC treatments show suppression of self-perpetuating inflammation (which caused my second heart attack), regeneration of heart cells, healing of scarred arterial tissue, decrease in cholesterol levels, and even prolapsed valve regeneration.

MSCs also modulate the immune system, decrease inflammation, and stimulate overall cell regeneration.

My Life’s Purpose - Connection

I’ve been incredibly blessed to live this rad life so far. The greatest moments, when I experience the deepest sense of joy, are when I connect with others on that “next level”. You know the place. It’s within us all. Where we truly live in the present moment, and transcend fear, loneliness, and doubt. If you know me, we’ve had this connection.

We’ve had this connection through music. Whether I was on stage playing and our eyes locked, or we met after the show. Or we just listened to music together and rejoiced in sonic glory. We’ve been there together, sharing a piece of our souls and revealing how moved we are by the magic of music in our lives.

We’ve had this connection in a Rock to Recovery session at your treatment center, or at the Warrior Games. When you didn’t believe you could write lyrics and sing our original song because you’re “not a writer/singer/musician”. But we worked patiently together, and you poured your heart out on paper. Then you sang your ass off, despite the fear of what others would think, and that vulnerability transformed in to immeasurable strength.

We’ve had this connection through doGs. You asked if you could say “hi” to mine. I asked to say “hi” to yours. We smiled with the yes. The purity of doG made it so we didn’t put up any walls, our natural innocence flowed with each wag and ear rub.

Or maybe I was there when your doG was getting its shots or was going in for surgery. You saw that I would treat him/her as if they were my own doG, that they were safe.

This connection is my purpose.

Going Forward

I could “stay the course”, take the medications, and simply wait to see if I’ll have another heart attack but I feel as though I owe it to myself and to those who love me to be proactive in my own healing process. I have done extensive research (see links below) and I choose to live boldly and try cutting edge medicine. In the course of this research I have come across several people who have firsthand experience with stem cell treatments and they report incredibly positive results.

I sense this will be my experience.

It is also my hope that this will bring awareness to everyone that heart disease is the NUMBER ONE cause of death in the United States. It is absolutely preventable through diet and lifestyle. I have taken even more steps to improve my health and decrease future heart attacks and hope that anyone reading this will consider taking action BEFORE they experience what I am now going through.

Please help me in any way you can. And stay RAD!

Hey everyone!

Thanks to YOU I was able to get stem cell treatment at the Cell Institute ( https://www.cellmedicine.com/) in Panama back in May.
The doctors recommended I wait a full six months to allow the cells to do their work, then follow up with an echocardiogram. Which I had a couple weeks ago.
The results were extremely positive! One thing an echocardiogram measures is ejection fraction ( https://www.mayoclinic.org/ejection-fraction/expert-answers/faq-20058286).

The normal range is 50-70%. In January, my ejection fraction was 55%, which is great for someone who has had two friggin' heart attacks! Six months after stem cell treatment it is now 60%. Hell yea.

So, my heart is firing on all cylinders (literally and figuratively) and I feel confident that the anti-inflammatory traits of the stem cells worked magic on my arteries as well. Unfortunately, beyond angiogram/CT scan, which both involve radiation, there is no real test to show what's going on in my arteries and those scans are not recommended unless absolutely necessary, i.e. an emergency.

Well... If you haven't seen or read my updates the last few months, I'll tell you about the positive physical results I started getting almost immediately after my treatment.

Along with intravenous and intramuscular injections, I asked them to inject some cells in to my big toe joints, as I've had gnarly arthritis in them for years. My joints have been swollen, had drastically impaired flexibility, and been terribly painful. I could not flex or curl my big toes. I did one round of cortisone injections, which worked wonderfully, of course. But that is a temporary and unhealthy treatment. In September of 2017, my big toe joints were at the point where a podiatrist had literally told me the ONLY option was to surgically fuse the joints. Yea. No thanks...

Two weeks after my stem cell treatment, I began seeing that the swelling had gone down, the pain had decreased remarkably, and I was able to curl and flex them again! This brought me to tears, y'all.
And, even though I still have arthritis in them, it has improved exponentially. I'm so grateful...

Peep THIS. For over a decade I had tendinitis in my right elbow. Some want to call it "tennis elbow", I call it "samurai sword elbow"...
All due respect to the masters of the sport but, I haven't played tennis since the 8th grade. I can't say exactly where my tendinitis came from but I have a sneaking suspicion it's from whipping so much ass on guitar for decades. You be the judge.

It got so bad that I had to stop studying the "exquisite art of the samurai sword" in 2009, which was heart breaking! At times, it became painfully difficult to even grip to lift a guitar case!

Well, my friends, within a few weeks of the stem cell treatment, it was gone. and has not returned. GONE.

So, even though I can't see inside my arteries, I can imagine the stem cells did their work on them just as they did in the rest of my body.

I want you all to know that it was extremely difficult and humbling to ask for financial help on such a large, public scale. Without the urging and support of my friends and family I would most likely have kept quiet and continued to sink into the bitter morass of self pity and depression that were lurking after that second heart attack.

As the result, I have been contacted by so many wonderful humans who have been suffering, far worse than I, and they've blessed me by sharing their stories of pain, frustration, and perseverance. We've come to support one another and strengthen our respective fortitude together.

- Samuel Beckett

I want to give a MEGA shout out to Joe Rogan for having Dr. Neil Riordan on his podcast, literally DAYS before I had the second attack.

Thank YOU again and again. I'm grateful and, if/when you see me, give me a big ol' hug!!!

Heart and Respect,

Sonny Mayo

My people!

I'm in such awe of the love and support you've shown me. To all my friends and family, and to those I have not formally met, I say 'THANK YOU!".

Due to your help, I've booked/confirmed my treatment at the Stem Cell Institute for the second week of May and it's likely that I'll be able to do a second treatment three months later! I am stoked for the adventure that lies ahead.

So much has happened in the last couple of days that I wasn't able to post an update Wednesday or Thursday so this is a long one!

I want to share with you that, as a result of launching this campaign, I've been contacted by several people (some friends, some I've never met) who are going through their own trying experiences with cardiovascular disease.
We've connected and are sharing our strength and hope in dealing with it. This is such a joy to me.

I even did an interview on Wednesday with my long time friends, Johnny Danger and Dee (Biatch) on WJJO radio in Madison, WI to try and spread awareness and support.

In fact, a previous acquaintance, now a friend, messaged me during the day on Tuesday. He sent all kinds of rad, healing vibes my way that day.
Then, I noticed on FB that night, that he ended up in the hospital with chest pains! It was my turn...
I hit him up and let him know I was down to lend an understanding ear. He called and we chatted for over an hour. He was released the next morning and is doing just fine today.
This is what it's all about for me. We're in this together, y'all.

You may know that heart disease is the NUMBER ONE cause of death in the world. Approximately 610,000 people die a year from heart attack in the US alone.
The disturbing fact is that this is largely preventable.

I spent the first 42 years of my life on the "American diet"... Raised on bacon double cheeseburgers, ice cream, cheese fries, steak and eggs, frickin' Hot Pockets, Velveeta, and so on... Like so many of us, I was trained to eat this way. My parents were trained to eat this way... We didn't know what we didn't know.

By the time I became vegetarian at the age of 42, it was too late. Plaque had already developed in my arteries from decades of fat rich diet and a genetic imbalance in my cholesterol. I was destined to have a heart attack three years later. Plant based diet or not.

What disturbs me about the American medical approach to heart disease is that, even with the advent of stents, blood thinners, and cholesterol medications, heart disease is STILL the number one killer for decades running. How can this be? With these "miracle" drugs and techniques, shouldn't there be a decline in the deaths caused by heart disease?

I am vegan. That doesn't mean I'm automatically healthy. There are plenty of processed, sugar packed vegan foods. But, I do happen to be a healthy eater and enjoy flavorful, hearty food (no pun intended... or was it?).

I'm not trying to "preach", push my philosophies on anyone, or convert anyone. That's not my business.

Love is my business and I give a great many f#cks about a great many things.

So, I'd like to suggest doing your own research, then
re-researching. We have to advocate for ourselves when it comes to our health because the fact is, to the medical industry, it's sadly about the bottom line. It's a business and we are customers.

This is not to say that people who work in and actually care about our health operate this way, but the Machine is what it is.

There are countless views and concepts on nutrition so we must work out what's best for ourselves individually.

I'd like to make a few recommendations though.
