Nepal Earthquake Relief Funding

Donation protected
Background

The 7.8 Richter scale earthquake that hit Nepal on 25 April 2015, and the numerous subsequent tremors, destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes in remote areas in the hills and mountains. Agrarian communities dependent upon subsistence farming lost their shelter, seed grains, livestock and draft animals used for plowing and preparing land for cultivation. Most, if not all, institutions including local health posts and schools have also been destroyed. Many families have been left homeless, protected from the elements by makeshift tents.

Before the earthquake, subsistence farmers grew their own food and bartered among neighbors for everything they needed. They have no cash reserves to buy the materials required for rebuilding their homes and communities. A tremendous amount of assistance is needed to help these families move from temporary housing to semi-permanent structures. We seek to raise funds to assist with this transition in Koshidekha-8 and 9, Kalinjor, Kavre, keeping in mind the potentially treacherous monsoon.

Mission: Kalinjor

All 171 households were completely destroyed in Kalinjor. Once the debris is cleared, village residents must resettle immediately into more secure shelter to prepare for the monsoon.

We will help the village by providing semi-permanent housing structures. The model for the structures is being developed both in consultation with housing experts and the community to ensure that the materials from the original houses (wood and bamboo) are efficiently utilized. The cost for each housing structure will be $275 USD.

Children and Youth First

Children and Youth First (CYF) will be leading the situation on the ground. The organization is a 501(C) non-profit originally established in 2008 by youth volunteers from Kathmandu and registered in the United States. For the last 7 years, they have worked to provide children with access to health services, quality education, recreation, personal and life-skills development and a peaceful, protective and safe environment. Now they  must expand their mission to assist the larger communities of the children they currently serve.

All of the money raised through this campaign will go towards the development and construction of semi-permanent houses in Kalinjor; CYF will not be using any of the funding for administrative purposes. Haushala Thapa, founder of CYF, and Nayan Pokhrel will be coordinating the overall mission and Shashi Tamang, a native of Kalinjor village, will act as community organizor.

We appeal to you to give,  give generously and share this campaign widely. We will ensure that every dollar spent yields the best possible results to rebuild a village that has virtually lost everything. We also invite you to travel through Nepal in the fall and winter trekking season, so that you can see what your donations have created, and meet the community that your generosity has touched.
