Hit by car while playing Fallout 4

$15,040 of $20,000 goal

on behalf of Ben Rose
 IRVING, TX
Between the hours of 2pm and 3pm on Sunday, December 6th, our good friend Ben Rose was spending his day as Bethesda intended -- sitting quietly playing  Fallout 4. His game was rudely interrupted by a Hyundai Sonata breaching his apartment wall and striking him in his computer chair. The car (which, at this point, appears to have been uninsured) had backed into a fence, then floored it through another apartment and into his, as you can see in the photos below.

Seen here are emergency struts added to keep the building secure. The damage was severe enough the city of Irving had to do a saftey inspection.

Despite having four points in toughness, Ben was injured by the impact; he sustained a fractured vertebra and a mostly-severed Achilles tendon.  It's presumed that had he not been in his computer chair, which took the initial hit and allowed him to roll partially to safety, it could have been much worse.  Though his recovery process will be lengthy and difficult, we are all extremely grateful and fortunate to still have Ben around.

We are creating this GoFundMe to help Ben cover the significant expenses that will occur, such as deductibles for his renters' and medical insurance, as well as co-pays and fees for medical treatment (apparently, bottlecaps are insufficient for payment outside of The Wasteland).  The immediate need for this assistance became abundantly clear when we discovered that items essential to his recovery and quality of life, such as a walker and wheelchair, are not currently being covered by his medical insurance due to a high deductible.  We are also trying to build up a small fund to cover his normal living expenses while he is out of work to recover. As a freight delivery driver, he will need to be medically cleared before he could possibly return to work, which will likely take at least a few months of healing and physical therapy.

We love Ben. It's as simple as that.  He is a dear and faithful friend, a hilarious beast, a gifted graphic designer (who created the graphics for my card game), a beloved brother and son and uncle.

For the past 9 years, he has been a dedicated and enthusiastic Texas Burner, volunteering at events, Town Halls, site preps, clean-ups, and gifting his time and creative energy to making art and awesome experiences for everyone in the community.

He's an incredible human.  Ben is counting on YOU, Mysterious Stranger!  Please help aid in the recovery of a fellow Vault-Dweller, and an all-around amazing guy who's taken a hell of a blow.  A million thanks to all of you for any help you can provide!

Update time!

Thanks again to each and every one of you. The warm wishes over the holidays, the encouraging comments from all over the world, just everything. You are all part of an amazing group of people that reached out through the internet and helped my good friend Ben Rose.

Though the Christmas break Ben stayed at my place. It was a good time having him here, playing games, catching up on shows and just being rather jolly.

Bethesda Softworks, Zeni-Max Media, Microsoft, and Game Stop sent some various gifts to cheer Ben up and get him back to gaming in style.

We got Ben out of the house at great effort on his part, switching from the walker to crutches, to catch a showing of The Force Awakens. The staff at Cinemark West Plano made our visit super smooth. We arrived early and they let him right in to the theatre to get a seat.

New Years Eve was held at a friends house nearby, with the assistance of another friend we managed to cart Ben over there for some Rock Band 4 and champagne toast at midnight. Laughs and companionship have been a major theme through this whole ordeal.

Last week Ben had his first follow up appointment for his back. Attached is his Facebook Post with that update. It looks like he only has one more month of the back brace and we'll see at the next follow up.

Just today Ben went in for the achilles tendon follow up, I have attached the screenshot from Facebook for that as well. They are a little concerned with the over all look of it, and asked him to remain vigilante over keeping it cleaned.

Microsoft has since reached out again and we have an exciting announcement coming in the next week. So please stay tuned for further updates.

The PO BOX is still valid for mailing any well wishes or what ever you'd like:

C/O Matthew Robinson
PO BOX 561175
The Colony, TX, 75056

Thanks again to the amazing staff at Bethesda Softworks, Zeni-Max Media, Microsoft, Game Stop, and Cinemark West Plano. To all the donors, It's been an amazing thrill-ride of anguish, despair, support, love, and laughter. Through all of this, and other world events R.I.P. Lemmy, David Bowie, and Alan Rickman.

We are forever grateful for each and every donor thus far. You may have noticed that I've increased the funding goal. I wanted to address that before anyone had any misgivings about my character or the intent of the campaign. When I first set up this GofundMe for Ben, so many of the costs were completely unknown; the only thing that was crystal-clear at that point was that my friend was going to need help, and we wanted to make that happen. When the initial goal was set, it was based on our conservative best guesses as to his deductibles, medical bills thus far, and minimal household expenses while Ben was out of work. It was also set up as a surprise for Ben, so we couldn't exactly ask him at that time.

After sitting down with Ben and going through numbers, everything looked great. However, this morning I had a realization that the deductible would only cover visits and physical therapy up to the new year. Starting Jan 1st, Ben will need to start meeting the next year's deductible. With his first scheduled follow-up on Jan 7th, I realized we are going to need to raise these funds fast to meet the medical system's demands.

So, we are setting a new goal in the hopes that we can further shield our friend from medical expenses. The bills have just begun to trickle in, and we may not fully know the extent of the current financial obligations for some time, let alone the costs for any necessary continued treatment. Please know that this is NOT something that we do without serious consideration of the facts at hand, and that we do not take anything for granted. Every single donation, every single share, every single like and "Get well!" has been completely stunning, and we are grateful for all of the support. We ask that, if possible, you continue to share Ben's story and keep him in your thoughts.

For those who have requested an address to mail cards and well-wishes, or offline donations you can send them to:

Thank you all so much for your concern, your empathy, your compassion, your virtual Stimpaks, and for keeping Ben's spirits up!

Is the goal just for medical or does personal damages fall into this as well. Because if this man needs a new gaming system or tv id be glad to dish out some spare cash.
