Help For Asher

Donation protected
This campaign is to help save the life of Asher Lynch – an amazing young man that means the world to us.

As one of the first in his family to go to college, a youth mentor, lifelong vegetarian, accomplished dancer and musician, actor, and budding entrepreneur, with no criminal record – Asher strongly defies the stereotypes of what a young black man can accomplish when he puts his mind to it.

If you ask Asher what his life’s goal is, without hesitation he’ll tell you: I want to become a world class entertainer on par with the greatest of all time. I want to use my music and dancing to inspire those around me to be creative and share with the world.

We need your help to make sure nothing gets in the way of that dream.

Asher’s Story:

On the morning of July 16, 2016, Asher collapsed while at home alone. After calling his mother for help, he was rushed to the nearest hospital. His hands and legs had been feeling slightly numb recently but he assumed it was caused by not getting enough exercise. Not able to afford insurance and fearing debt, he didn’t want to go to the ER without good cause. Collapsing left him with no choice.

After seeing a team of neurologists – his worst fear was realized: He had a tumor pressing on his spine that now made him unable to feel anything in his legs and most of his arms. Doctors didn’t know whether the tumor was cancerous, nor did they have any idea of the extent of the damage or how to tackle it.

Add to this the fact that the hospital staff was negligent in providing consistent answers, and did not want to actively run needed tests because of his lack of insurance. Asher demanded a biopsy but the hospital repeatedly refused. After suffering for 7 days, Asher finally received a biopsy which revealed that Asher suffered from an extremely rare form of Schwannoma – which affects less than 0.00067 percent of the US population.

Schwannoma, also known as a neuroma, is a spinal tumor that arises from the lining of the nerve cells of the spine. Asher’s tumor had grown very large, which caused it to compress his spinal cord. Schwannoma can be removed by surgery or radiation therapy. However, because the tumor is pressing so hard on Asher’s spine, even with removal -- recovery will take from 6 months to over a year. He’ll have to relearn how to stand, use his hands, and eventually walk and dance again.

Without treatment, Asher will permanently lose all feeling in his arms, fingers, torso, and legs, and eventually be paralyzed from the neck down. He would never be able to dance again, to perform on stage, or be the entertainer he has always dreamed of.

These devastating changes are a 100% certainty if he doesn't get treated, and soon. It is our worst nightmare, and an unfair sentence for someone who deserves better.

 What Needs to be Done

Because the state of Georgia hasn’t updated its Medicare laws, Asher cannot get any Medicare in Georgia to cover the cost of treatment. Signing up for coverage via Healthcare.gov (Obamacare) will not open again until November – to long to wait to remove his tumor. We’ve also reached out to private insurance companies for help but they refuse to cover him.

Having exhausted all other options, we’ve been able to apply for Medicare in Asher’s home state of New York and are trying to get him moved to a hospital there. However, Medicare will not cover the full cost of treatment or Asher’s recovery.

Your donation will help cover the costs of the essentials to getting Asher back on his feet. This includes:

·      Transfer to a responsible and qualified hospital in New York

·      Surgery or radiation treatment

·      Post surgery/treatment care including physical therapy

·      Stay in a lesser care facility

·      Living expenses including medicine

We need to raise at least $75,000 to get Asher through recovery over the next year. There are still many unknowns but we cannot do this without your help.

As you read this Asher is stuck in a facility waiting for treatment he cannot get because he can’t afford it. The sooner this money is raised, the sooner he’ll be able to get the help he needs.

 Please Help Today

What would you do if you knew that money was the only thing standing between someone you cared about and living? What would any good person do?

We can't let this happen. We can't stand by and watch Asher lose everything that makes him who he is and suffer unimaginable pain and frustration of missing out on life.

Please help support our urgent mission. Every cent counts, but even if all you can do is forward this link to as many people you know, you will always be in our prayers.

Spread the word!

Stretch Goal: $400,000

There is a chance that Medicare may not be able to cover the cost of Asher's surgery. If that is the case, he'll be responsible for the entire cost of his surgery - an additional cost of $325,000. This would bring the total cost of his care to $400,000. We're working with healthcare professionals and advocates to avoid this, but if that happens we hope we'll have your support.

Thank you. From the bottom our hearts, with all of the gratitude and love we could possibly offer: THANK YOU!

Determined, optimistic and forever grateful,

All those who hold Asher dear.
