Dear Friends,

We are organizing and encouraging donations to help affected grooms and horseman who lost so much in the San Luis Rey Fire and the Creek Fire here in Southern California.  With the funds we will purchase the necessary items to create personal hygiene kits for people, things you use every day that they no longer have.

We at Brookway Stables were affected by the Creek Fire - we were forced to evacuate early Tuesday morning December 5th .  By some small miracle, our main barn was saved and we will be able at some point to return.  Others in our neighbohood were not so lucky, they lost everything.  Then only 2 days later we watched the horrific events of the Lilac fire at San Luis Rey Downs training center in Bonsall, just north of San Diego.  We feel fortunate that we were mostly displaced, where our fellow horseman lost everything.  This compelled us to band together and do our part to help, even if it's small, every little bit helps.

If you are local, feel free to shop for your own donations and deliver them to us:

Archie Cox & Jorge Hidalgo
Middle Ranch
11700 North Little Tujunga Canyon Road
Lake View Terrace, CA 91342

Send a private message if you plan to deliver so we keep on the lookout.   In addition, we will be sending some of the money raised to the local feed stores who are already setup in providing hay, feed and bedding to those displaced animals should we get enough donations.  We will continue to distribute in the coming weeks as we get donations.

Hygiene Kit Items include:
Toothpaste
Toothbrushes
Deodorant
Bars of Soap
Shampoo/Conditioner
Socks
Underwear
Tampons
Razors
Shaving cream
Topical meds for minor burns
Lotion
Chapstick
Q-tips
Small packets of Kleenex
Cough Drops
Eye Wash
Small flashlight
Laundry detergent

Additional items for drop off:
Clothing  (baseball caps, socks, underwear, t-shirts, working gloves, sweatshirts, jeans)

Mini Fridges
Microwaves (small)

Sleeping bags/bedding/pillows/ towels

We will be funding the above with the money you so generously donate.  We will keep everyone informed along the way of how much of the funds were used for relief for both fires and the various grooms and horsemen that we have helped.  We will pay for these supplies directly, then reimburse ourselves by withdrawing from this account - we will supply all of the receipts and recap to everyone where the money has been spent and how much for each thing we do/support.

I will personally withdrawl the funds and reimburse anyone on the team who has a receipt for the items we agree as a group to purchase and deliver.  We are divinding a conquering getting things done in a timely fashion.  A running spreadsheet of money that has been spent and where it went will keep everyone informed.

In an effort to help where messages and information get buried in posts, here are phone numbers for feed stores in Del Mar area who already have a system in place for delivery of hay, grain and bedding- easy to call them directly and contribute.

Mary’s Tack and Feed:  858-755-2015

Carter's Hay and Grain: 760-436-4738

Thank you for trusting us to help our fellow grooms and horsemen in need after both of these horific events.

Signed,

The Brookway Gang

Dear Friends,

We are now shutting down the GoFundMe page and finalizing accounting. Thank you all so much for your support. Over $36,000 was raised and we have been able to help so many involved in both the CREEK and the LILAC fires.

Grooms received clothing and daily essentials to get back on their feet. Groundskeepers who immediately lost their jobs when stables were destroyed - we were able to cover their salary thru the holidays so they could celebrate with their families and find a new job. Horsemen who lost everything in an instant and didn't have the resources to replenish the basics immediately- we were able to help them so they could begin working again. There is still a long road ahead for many folks, but because of your generosity we as a group have been able to help so many people begin to become whole again.

In addition, so many people gave donations of product and supplies which were all delivered to those in need in both locations. Thank you for your generosity and kindness and know that you all made someones day a little brighter.

Many thanks,

The Brookway Gang

First of all, thank you to EVERYONE who has so generously donated, the outpouring of support has definitely restored our faith in humanity. Thank you to everyone for all of the shares, it takes a village and we are so thankful to be able to have the money to lend a hand.

UPDATE: We set into high gear today assembling assistance kits for the grooms displaced by the Lilac Fires. We have put together "kits" that include full size basic hygiene items to undergarments, jeans, tee shirts and sweatshirts, along with twin sheet sets, blankets and towels. Tomorrow is the purchase of the microwaves and small fridges for these grooms use these items in their daily lives. The first load travels to San Diego on Monday and goes directly to those grooms who have been displaced from the San Luis Rey Downs training facility in an effort to get them back on their feet. This is only the first step of many we are taking as a task force to help those in need, one step at a time to ensure we are organized and most useful with the funds you have so kindly donated. We are working together to communicate with those on the ground to ensure we bring what is needed so not to overwhelm volunteers with stuff. Thank you again for spreading the word and putting your trust in us to help those we can. We will update as we go along. -- The Brookway Gang
