I'm Jaclyn Atkins and my cousin Joshua Aversa was on vacation with his girlfriend Stephanie in Costa Rica when he got into a very serious ATV accident.
We are told that Josh was found alone on the side of the road by some other Canadian tourists and they called for help.
He is currently in hospital in Liberia, Costa Rica with his girlfriend Steph by his side.
As of now, he is having trouble breathing and his condition is still very critical. He has not woken up and has several brain bleeds both surface and deep. As of 1am this morning his was sweating profusely and had clammy hands and feet and his toes are curled.
If you know me personally, many of you know I have experienced a similar situation with my sister. It was extremely hard on my immediate family as well as my very large extended family. This situation feels even more helpless because our family (and it's a big one) isn't at his bed side and able to speak with his doctors directly.
Over the past few hours our family has come together and is getting closer to getting him medically evacuated and back home here in Toronto.
***** UPDATED *****
We have been given a quote from "Angels of Flight" and the air ambulance is going to cost $37,500 USD (almost $50,000 CAD).
$50,000 CAD only would only be just covering his transportation. There are still many medical costs involved in the situation. (His parents flights to and from CR, Time off work, Housing near the hospital, Food while in the hospital, etc.)
I have created this page on behalf of my aunt (Gail Gross) to ask the friends and family of Josh to please come together in this time of need and bring him home so we can be with him every step of the way on his medical journey to recovery.
We are thankful for anything you can donate. Even if you just repost his campaign, getting the message out there helps!
Sorry for the gap in updates there, some stuff came up and I wasn’t able to update.
Tomorrow will be three weeks since Josh’s accident. Sunday will be three weeks since I started the Go Fund Me campaign. Because of 434 of you (well more because families donated) we have been able to raise $34,500 in only 17 days!!!! This means we only have $26,500 left to raise for the medical expenses that have come up thus far.
We are working on different fundraising methods and events but would like to give Josh’s family some time to rest and spend quality time together before we start those campaigns. I am thinking early next year we will be starting so keep checking back here for more information!!
Josh is currently stable! (thumbs up!!!)
He is breathing on his own as well!! He has done so well that he no longer needs to have a tracheotomy. Also it was a possibility he would need a g-tube inserted to help with him getting the proper nutrition he needs. He no longer requires that either!! He has also been moved to a different unit and has “graduated” from the ICU.
Josh is showing signs of progress and increased strength daily. He is still unable to communicate vocally at this time but he communicates in other ways such as minimal hand and foot movements. He also is able to track his environment with his eyes.
On behalf of Josh’s large blended and extended family, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to all of those who have donated, given their support and sent prayers and positive vibes during this time. Josh wouldn’t have been able to progress as well and as quickly without all of you!!
To reiterate, during this period of healing and rest, Josh is still very limited in his visiting hours from immediate family only. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me through GFM or FB.
Thank you all
We hope you are enjoying the Christmas season!!
I want to thank all Family. Friends and all others who have so kindly taken the time to donate to Joshuas Fund. At a time that is hard for all of us. I wish I could see you all and thank you. I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart. You have no idea how much this means to me. I am alone with I family but Josh here. I am by his side everytime I can get. Thank you to friends and family. People I don't know that we'll or don't know at all. God bless you all. Really appreciated. There are good people out there! And I know he will wake up and come home and be his caring and loving self. Thank you again. Xo
I can't express how greatful I am to all my family and friends who have shared this post and donated for someone you don't even know to help my family. Positive thoughts and prayers work miracles and the kindness of people that have helped fund Josh's journey back to his family it's absolutely amazing! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and for bringing my Step-Nephew that much closer to his Mom. God Bless ❤️❤️❤️
Today as Alexa and I stood by Josh's bedside, I silently thanked the Lord for hearing the prayers of Father Robert yesterday of St. Michael's chapel. With the soothing and calming sounds of nature playing softly on Josh's bedrail, Father Robert administered the Sacrament of the Sick. He anointed Joshua with holy water and together with Marcel and I, said the Lord's Prayer. It wasnt long after the Priest left the room that I started to see some positive and hopeful movements by Josh. Is it a coincidence that today he is breathing on his own at 75 % capacity with some support when yesterday he was 100% reliant on a breathing tube? Today his eyes opened up frequently. At times focusing directly at me and Alexa as we spoķe to him. I believe miracles DO happen !! I know there will be some people who are skeptics. That's fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion. All that matters is what I choose to believe in. I am going to continue to pray for Josh and look at this as a possible miracle in the making. My daughter Alexa and Josh (Marcel and Gail's son) have a unique bond. Both were born February 26, 1991 at Mt. Sinai hospital. So when I look at Josh, I am forever reminded that this precious young man will always have a special place in my heart. ❤❤❤
The Uncles Aunts and Cousins in Cape Town - South Africa continue to hold you all, particularly Joshua in their hearts, minds and prayers. We pray for his revival and full recovery as God wills, and for special blessings on all the extended family and friends who are rallying around and supporting Gail, Marcel, Stephanie and Jonah at this time. Faith, Hope and Love to you all. xx
Hello to all of our tremendous supporters. As the holidays are approaching it can be either a happy or sad time for each of us. At this time in our lives it is a joyous time. Joshua is recovering slowly with the support financial and spiritual but will still need a lot of care. As a mother or parent we do not want to see our children suffer. He is on the mend and I with my Family and Extended Family would like to thank you all. I know it is very hard to thank each and everyone but I try too as much as possible. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday and safe season. Gail and Family
Doug & Gail Gross would like to thank all family, friends, co workers and all the kind hearted anonymous doners for thier generousity and support in this difficult time. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us to bring our son home. We still have a long way to go bu
Hello Family and Friends, once again thanks for all you generosity both Spiritual and Financial. We are getting lots of feed back from our donators regarding Joshuas progress. He is progressing slowly he has now been eating on his own. His caloric intake is better his last feed tube was removed yesterday. The physio is progressing and his support team is trying to reprogram the body. His long term memory is great, however the short term has to be worked on, meaning his cognitive is a work in progress. Joshua is working hard with his team and they are proud of his efforts. I see a change in him daily. He does not like to view pictures of himself. So please respect his privacy
