Life is funny how it surprises you. Sometimes what you planned doesn't always happen. But, then suddenly a new path opens doors that you didn't imagine were even there. This happened to me. When my life took an unexpected turn, I decided to follow it.
As the first Cummings daughter to graduate college, I am also the first to take such a bold step toward independence.
As many of you may already know, I applied for and was accepted into an NYU summer publishing institute. In this program, post-bachelors students are given the amazing opportunity to attend NYU for a summer. We get to experience intense coursework and rub elbows with big names in the publishing industry.
Already, I have received information that we will be hearing from people like Pilar Guzman (Editor-in-Chief of Conde Nast Traveler and former EIC of Martha Stewart Living), Michael Clinton (President of Marketing and Publishing Director of Hearst Magazines), and John Gluck (Managing Editor of Vogue).
And this is just the tip of the iceberg!
I fly into JFK on May 30 and start my adventure as a "city girl" for the first time. The course itself begins on June 2 and we jump right in without delay. Each day (some days being up to 12 hours long) is packed with lectures, assignments, readings, group projects, and real-world applications. By the end, this investment will pay off by helping me land a publishing job in NYC!
New York City is a major hub for the publishing industry, so we will even visit publishing houses and companies in person! I can't wait!
The 6-week program is divided into thirds, with each 2-week period focusing on book, magazine, and digital publishing.
This is most definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am beyond excited. But I need your help! New York is expensive and I want to be able to pay for EVERYTHING myself. When I say everything, I mean
- Tuition
- Books and supplies
- Food and provisions
- Transportation (subway)
- Flights
- Housing
To raise money myself, I have sold old items, jewelry, clothes, sold my plasma, and worked long hours in a computer lab. I have also taken out a loan. So far, I've raised about $2,000 of my own money! This will cover my flights and housing. Now I am calling on friends and family to help me "get over the hump" and raise the remaining amount. It would mean the world to me if you donated even just one dollar to help me close the gap.
