Help Babur Balos Fight PSC - A Rare Liver Disease
For almost his entire life, Babur Balos has been an active and passionate advocate for social justice. But he doesn’t just talk about social justice, he puts his passion into action as an educator and a community organizer both in Chicago, where he lives, and nationwide.
He is also a passionate, loving father to his two beautiful young daughters: 3-year old Anaela and 1-year old Nadia; and love, strength and support for his partner, Cynthia.
But for Babur the tables have been turned and today, right now, we need to help Babur! Babur has PSC, a rare and very often fatal liver disease.
According to the Mayo Clinic, PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) is a disease of the bile ducts, which carry the digestive liquid bile from the liver to the small intestine. In PSC, inflammation causes scars within the bile ducts. These scars make the ducts hard and narrow and gradually cause serious liver damage.
While he has tried to work, the disease has caused him incredible pain, jaundice and significant weight loss. He can no longer work steady hours. For those of you who know Babur, from his work at the front desk of several Chicago high-rises, he has always had a positive attitude and a bright smile. Now, “It is a very difficult and long process with many uncertainties. I have been physically and emotionally torn down.”
For people suffering with PSC, the disease progresses slowly and can lead to liver failure, repeated infections, and tumors of the bile duct or liver. Liver transplant is the only known cure for PSC!
Babur is undergoing care for PSC that focuses on monitoring liver function, managing symptoms and providing very painful procedures that temporarily open blocked bile ducts. But again the only treatment for the disease is a liver transplant.
He was initially treated at Evanston Northshore Hospital but because of the rarity of the disease, he was transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center, one of the most prestigious academic medical centers in the nation. As you can well imagine, especially with the ever rising cost of healthcare, his treatment is very expensive. Babur has insurance but certainly not enough to cover the costs of his care and the inevitable transplant.
