Richard Phillips "spent more years  behind bars than any other wrongfully imprisoned person in America"

After being wrongly convicted for a murder he didn't commit, Richard Phillips was exonerated 45 years later!  In 1972 he was sentenced to life in prison. 38 years later, Richard Polumbo, also accused, admitted that he lied. He NEVER knew Phillips, NEVER met him, NEVER planned a murder with him. However, Richard Phillips didn't hear about this until the Innocence Project  got wind of the admission by Polumbo in 2014.

According to Attorney Gabi Silver, "Phillips is one of the warmest, kindest, most considerate people" she knows.

"There's no bitterness, whatsoever. He is ready to live life.  In fact, Richard is already speaking to church groups about his experiences."

According to the law, he is entitled to $50,000 for every year he spent in prison for a crime he didn't commit. That means the state of Michigan owes him more than $2,000,000. In the meantime, while living with a friend, he is trying to put a life together. With only $80 in food stamps per month, Richard, doesn't have the means to pay for health care, buy clothes, get his driver's license and secure transportation, pay rent or even
just go buy a cup of coffee at McDonald's.

Please consider helping this man spent 45 years in prison. He's hoping to reconnect with family he hasn't seen since 1972. I chose to set this up on behalf of Attorney Gabi Silver who is one of my dearest friends. She goes above and beyond to see that every one she helps gets treated fairly.

It's the middle of January and here in Michigan it's freezing out. We hope everyone is safe and warm and can take care of their needs. Richard Phillips is still trying to do just that. He needs to buy groceries, pay his utilities, rent, gas in his car and stay warm and safe.

For all of you who've asked about his art -- here is an update. We are working on releasing some art for sale and perhaps some limited edition prints. When we have more information about this, we will share it here. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has donated - every dollar goes directly to Richard to take care of his needs so he can enjoy his freedom without worry. After 45 years locked up for a crime he didn't commit, he deserves some peace and to know that he doesn't have to worry about even the most basic of needs.

In gratitude,
Roz (Richard's friend)

Happy Holidays!

It's the time of year where families are buying gifts, charities are looking for end of year donations, individuals are lonely and looking for connections and it's a time of year where emotions are running high.

Just one year ago, Richard Phillips walked out of prison after being exonerated for a crime he did not commit. He spent 47 years in prison. This was most of his adult life. He spent more time in prison wrongly convicted than anyone in U.S. history.

Over the past year I have gotten to know Richard. He is kind. He is optimistic. He is creative. He is loving. Richard has the biggest heart with not one ounce of bitterness seeping through even though, given what he's been through, he has every right to be angry and bitter and miserable.

Richard has become part of our family and we've become part of his family. At a recent FREEDOM celebration, he broke down in tears while acknowledging what this past year and the people who've helped him have meant.

He is entitled to money from the state of Michigan for every year he sat incarcerated. He has not gotten a dime. NOT ONE. He was given social security as a "favor." The government notified that this will be ending.

Until the state releases his funds, and god willing it will happen sooner than later, this beautiful man needs to eat and pay rent and keep his lights and heat on and not worry that he'll be on the street.

I know that budgets are spent, you've been inundated with end of year "asks" but PLEASE, help Richard take care of his basic needs. Any amount helps and it all goes to him. If you are unable to give, please share.
