Uganda LGBT Director @ WSF 2016 MTL

Kamoga Hassan is a young Ugandan prolific human rights activist  and filmmaker  as well as the Founder of the First and Only LGBTQ Film Festival in Uganda. The Queer Kampala International Film Festival (QKIFF)

Kamoga has produced a number of short documentaries for Non-profit organizations in Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, Egypt, Mozambique and Swaziland.

In 2014, he produced Outed: The Painful Reality, the hard-hitting feature about the dangers of homophobic media reporting on LGBTQ issues in Uganda. The film  won  the Barbra Gittings International Human Rights Award 2015 and the Best International Feature Film Award at the Baltimore International Black Film Festival.  He is currently in pre-production for his latest documentary entitled Where is Home on Ugandan Gay Asylum.

The World Social Forum (WSF)  takes place on August 9-14th in Montreal. It is the largest gathering of civil society to find solutions to the problems of our time. Started in 2001 in Brazil, the WSF brings together in each of its edition tens of thousands of participants to more than a thousand activities (workshops, conferences, artistic performances etc.) on various themes (social, solidarity economy, environment, human rights, democratization etc. ). Never has the World Social Forum have on its agenda LGBTQ rights until this year!

Kamoga has been invited on the international  DIVERSITY Panel to discuss  the issue of homophobia and finding solutions, on August 11th along with lawyer/activist Maurice Tomlinson , award winning producer/director/curator Karin Hazé, Tunisian LGBTQ  activist, Rami Ayari and other panelists from Black Lives Matter Toronto.

The World Social Forum coincides with Pride Montreal this year, which will be a unique opportunity for Kamoga to meet with funders, leaders, activists, artists, academics and the community at large. 

As a filmmaker, he also wants to take this unique opportunity to go to the Toronto International Film Festival Market in Septembre to  speak about his role and part in the movement to end homophobia and transphobia  in Uganda and in the rest of the World to potential new allies and funders.

Unexpectidely, the financing  for the international pannelists did not reach its goal through the LGBTQ committee of the World Social Forum and this is why we are launching an EMERGENCY CALL to help fund his trip to Canada on such short notice.

We are currently looking for funds to cover his trip to Canada for transportation, accommodation and per diem.

Kamoga's name means Miracle in Ugandan and  as we seize this opportunity, we feel strongly that his presence is needed at the World Social Forum and this may just be the miracle waiting to happen. Thanks in advance!

Kamoga Hassan est un jeune et prolifique activiste des droits de l’homme et cinéaste  Ougandais, également fondateur du premier et unique festival de films LGBTQI en Ouganda, The Queer Kampala International Film Festival (QKIFF).

Kamoga a produit plusieurs courts-métrages pour des ONGs en Ouganda, au Rwanda, Malawi, Égypte, Mozambique et au Swaziland.  En 2014, il a produit ‘Outed : The painful reality’, le long métrage choc sur les dangers des médias homophobes traitant des questions LGBT en Ouganda. Le film a remporté le prix Barbara Gittings International Human Rights Award en 2015 et le prix de meilleur long métrage international au festival international Baltimore International Black Film Festival. Il travaille présentement à la pré-production de son dernier documentaire nommé ‘Where is Home’, sur l’asile gay ougandais.  

Le Forum Social Mondial (FSM) est le plus grand rassemblement de la société civile au monde, dont l’objectif est de trouver des solutions aux problèmes de notre époque. Né en 2001 au Brésil, le FSM rassemble à chacune de ses éditions des dizaines de milliers de participants autour de plus de mille activités diverses (ateliers, conférences, performances artistiques etc.) sur des thèmes variés (social, économie solidaire, environnement, droits humains, démocratisation etc.). Pour la première fois de son histoire, le FSM aura à son agenda les droits LGBT cet été à Montréal, du 9 au 14 Août.   

Kamoga a été invité comme conférencier sur un panel international diversifié pour parler de la question de l’homophobie et trouver des pistes de solutions, le 11 Août, aux côtés de l’avocat activiste Maurice Tomlinson, de la cinéaste/productrice/curatrice primée Karin Hazé, de l’activiste LGBTQ tunisien Rami Ayari et d’autres panélistes du Black Live Matter de Toronto.

Le Forum Social Mondial coincide cette année avec Fierté Montréal, ce qui constituera une opportunité formidable pour Kamoga de rencontrer des bailleurs de fonds, leaders, activistes, artistes, universitaires et membres de la communauté LGBT au sens large.

Comme cinéaste, Kamoga voudrait aussi profiter de cette opportunité unique pour assister au festival international de films de Toronto en Septembre afin de parler de son rôle et son action au sein du mouvement pour lutter contre l’homophobie et la transphobie au Ouganda et dans le reste du monde à de nouveaux alliés potentiels et donateurs.  

Malheureusement, le financement pour les panélsites internationaux n’a pas atteint son objectif via le comité LGBTQ du Forum Social Mondial et c’est pourquoi nous lançons un APPEL D’URGENCE afin d’aider à financer son séjour au Canada.

Nous sommes présentement à la recherche de fonds pour couvrir les frais de transport, logement et per diem au Canada.

"Kamoga" signifie "miracle" en ougandais, et nous pensons fortement que sa présence est nécessaire au FSM et pourrait être justement le miracle que nous attendions. Merci en avance!
