Help Send Zaan Home

People describe Zaan Scott as a humble, kind, strong, fit, and quiet man. As a member of the Capitol Hill Community, he is a reliable coworker, great friend and fantastic swim coach at the Eastern Market Pool (William H Rumsey Aquatic Center) on Capitol Hill, where he has worked for more than four years. Zaan lifeguards, coaches kids and adult swim lessons, and is a helpful and friendly face at the pool for the entire community. Anyone who has gone swimming over the past four years has almost definitely encountered Zaan - he basically lived in the water!
On April 9th, on his way home after work in SE, he was approached by an armed assailant looking to rob him. A second assailant appeared out of the shadows and shot him in the back. Although the assailants did not take any of his material belongings before running away, they stole his health, independence, sense of safety and livelihood in that one moment when they fired the gun. Police are still looking for the gunmen.
The bullet shattered Zaan’s sixth vertebrae and severed half of his spinal cord. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down and is living in rehab until he is self sufficient again. He attends physical and occupational therapy three hours each day to rehabilitate his spinal cord injury and goes into each session challenging himself to work even harder than the last session. He is desperately clinging to the hope that he will walk again soon and hopes to be back in the pool as soon as possible. Although Zaan is strong and faithful, it will not be an easy road to recovery!
Zaan is in need of financial assistance to get him through this time of need, and he believes in the kindness of strangers, friends and his community.
We are hoping to raise money through this fund to cover the following:
**Relocation to a safe, wheelchair accessible community and apartment by June 1, 2017.
**Purchasing some of the costly equipment insurance will not pay for, but will be necessary for his rehabilitation (such as a portable commode, standing frame, tub chair, etc.).
**Funds to defray the costs of food, rent and other daily expenses since he will be out of work for a long time.
Please support Zaan by donating to this fund!
Any amount will help as he battles to walk again and to keep his spirits up in this time of need.
Zaan also welcomes visitors and asks you all to keep him and his recovery in your thoughts and prayers!
I first and foremost want to send a huge thank you and hug and everyone who donated, comments and prayed for us throughout this entire ordeal. Your kind words, generosity, and prayers are truly keeping me strong. I am in the midst of planning Zaan's funeral with his family and will make his funeral arrangements available as soon as I am able.
A portion of the funds were used to pay medical expenses, living expenses, and buy medical equipment while Zaan was still with us. Since his tragic passing all available funds will be used for his funeral expenses. Again, his funeral will be open to the public and the details will be posted soon.
I couldn't thank you all enough for your support, generosity and respect during the past 5-6 weeks. Zaan was truly loved and will be missed without a shadow of doubt. It's humbling to know our love touched others and I pray it continues to do so. Real love exists and chivalry is not dead. Love unapologetically and love hard. Everyone is capable of giving love and being loved. My love didn't end on May 17th, it just got stronger & I gained my own guardian angel. Words have not healed me but they have brought me an enourmous amount of comfort. Again, I thank you all with everything I have left in me.
Please give me the space to properly grieve the loss of the love of my life.
The good die young.
All proceeds are going towards his funeral expenses.
I will forever love Zaan M D Scott
Zaan was discharged from rehab yesterday! He's much more self sufficient than when this ordeal began, but we have a long way to go before even a slither of independence is returned. We didn't do bad our first night, but it was not great. I was so worried about Zaan being OK once reality him, that I didn't even ponder what our new normal would look like. I'm still here for the long haul though. We believe this is just a test of our faith and plan to pass with flying colors!
As to all of the various media outlets who have reached out, THANK YOU! We have chosen who do to do an interview and an article with, so check your emails. Thank everyone who has contributed, wants to contribute, or those with intentions of the complete opposite. None of this couldn't be any easier without any of you.
Humbled and Blessed,
Zaan and Jamese
