Help us Turn Things Around

Hi there. We are Jay and Tory Turner, and we've had one hell of a year. Despite all the slings and arrows fate has thrown us, we thought we could pull through just on our own. It turns out, we were wrong.

A year ago, we were happy, comfortable, and content. We had a new car, good jobs, and a house. Then, 2016 began with a beloved grandfather's passing, and then a step-mother's, and then both of us were laid off (Jay's third in his 17-year professional career, and Tory's 2nd) as the company we worked for closed down. We sold our house (for a loss) and moved to Austin, TX, near Tory's family and some fantastic friends, and started our recovery plan: Tory would get a solid job, and Jay would work part-time and go to school to begin a less volatile career.

Fast forward to the day after Thanksgiving. Tory got in an accident on her way home from driving Jay to work. She escaped with a minor concussion and no other injuries (thankfully), but we've now found out that the car was totaled. And now we're facing down a move, lost work, deductables, co-payments, and the fact that our insurance will not pay us what our car is worth... and with our lack of funds, collateral, or down payment, we're not likely to get a car easily to replace the old one. Without a car, we cannot get to work, or school. It is the lynchpin of our attempt to start over from the catastrophic layoffs from earlier this year. Without it, everything drops to a standstill, and much of the progress we have managed to make will be gone.

We've put as a goal the difference between what we owe on our car and what the insurance will pay, but anything helps. We're seriously in trouble here: It's all happening at the same time, fate trying to pull resources from us that we simply do not have, while taking away the things we need in order to do these things for ourselves.

Any help you can spare will mean so much to us as we try to recover from the heartbreaking events of 2016. Without it, we fear we will be in crippling debt without any means to recover, and that terrifies us. We are happy to pay you back in stories, or letters, or anything else that a talented writer and cook can provide. Your generosity will not be forgotten.

Thank you so much.
