Help replace the CCJ library!

On the 27th November 2018, heavy rainfall in Bristol caused a catastrophic roof leak into the library at Christ Church Junior School in Downend rendering it out of use indefinitely. There were thousands of books in the library, some of which have been saved but many have been damaged/thrown away and will need to be replaced. The cost of the roof repairs alone have been estimated at £40,000 which we now know will be kindly met by emergency funding from South Gloucestershire Council. However as a school we need to fundraise to meet the costs of replacing the books, along with other library equipment and furniture/carpets. Any donation will help to get this vital resource back up and running for our children. Many thanks in advance from everyone at Christ Church Junior School!

Good afternoon and Happy New Year!

Miss Friend and I are planning to do a long (6 mile) sponsored walk from Bristol Central Library up to our own school library in Downend on Saturday 19th January. Some of the staff and Governors will also be joining me and we would be delighted if some of our families may consider coming too. We will meet for the walk at 10am by Bristol Central library (near Bristol Cathedral and College Green) and we will then leave at about 10.15am to walk through the city centre and all the way up to Christ Church Juniors. At various points we will stop for snack/drink breaks but it will be a 6 mile walk, lasting several hours so you'd need a packed lunch and plenty to drink as well as warm clothes and appropriate footwear. If you can join us then we would be delighted but all children will remain the responsibility of their parent/carer at all times.

Even if you are unable to join us, then we would appreciate it if you would consider sponsoring us or asking friends/family to sponsor us. We need to raise approximately £15,000 to re-carpet the library, buy new furniture, replace many of the damaged books, buy a new computer and fix the heaters etc. I am delighted to announce that the bank RBS have responded to our appeal by giving us an amazing £10,000 and our GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/help-us-to-replace-the-CCJ-school-library is showing £1749 of kind donations, so we are a long way towards this target already. If you are able to sponsor us, ask colleagues or friends to sponsor us or join us for the walk then please ask for a sponsor form from the school or donate through this page. We know we have a brilliant community backing us and that between us we will manage to raise the funds to make the library a fantastic resource for your children once again.

Thank you as ever for your support,

Pippa Osborne

Thanks so much to all those who have donated/shared. There has been an overwhelming response from the school and local community to the flooding of the library. There have been donations of money and books directly to the school also as detailed in the school newsletter, all of which will help in getting the library back up and running in its full capacity for the teachers and children. We are going to take a break now for Christmas but fundraising will resume in the New Year with a sponsored walk in January. Please contact the school on 01454 866516 for more information regarding this. Have a good Christmas all!!!

From Mrs Pippa Osborne (Headteacher of CCJ)

I am humbled by the overwhelming response to the funding plea and urge you to continue to share our link as widely as possible so that we can return the building into a hub of reading that can be enjoyed by the whole school.

We have estimated that carpet, furnishings, seating, replacement books and a new library computer will cost £5000-£7000 which will require continued fundraising into the new year.

So if anyone can join us on Saturday 19th January for a sponsored walk from Bristol Central Library to Downend, then we would be grateful! Details to follow in the New Year...

Thanks again for your continued support.
