My girlfriend and I traveled to The Gambia where we befriended a local man who goes by the name of Smiley.
He made our travels very interesting, because he opened our eyes to what’s really happening in Africa unlike the hotel we stayed at which tries to keep its business within the hotel area.
People are very happy even with the little that they have, nevertheless they are struggling to survive.
The average pay if you manage to find a job(which is very difficult here I might add) is 3500 dalasi which is about 60€/month , 6 days a week 10-12 hours per day.
Our friend Smiley has a small shop next to the beach where he sells his hand made carvings among other small souvenirs. Business is very difficult though and relies solely on tourist.
We visited Smileys home and neighborhood, where people live in unsafe and unsanitary conditions.
We had long conversations about how everything works there and about his hopes, dreams and reality. It was a real cultural shock .
Smiley mentioned how much “more” he would make if he had a taxi and could work as a driver.
We soon realized that we can’t help everyone , but making a change in one persons life for the better would mean the world to them and to us.
Our goal is to raise 2500€ so that Smiley could buy a car and have some extra to get it started!
So please help us help him and his wife!!
