Help Us Get to DI Globals

The Lightening Bolts are a group of seven 5th grade students who have been working together for 3 years now in Destination Imagination.  They meet a couple of times a week from October until March finding ways to solve a challenge by using creativity, engineering and talents.  This year the Lightening Bolts won their Regional Tournament and moved on to the State Tournament.  This past weekend they won their State Tournament and are now on their way to represent Massachusetts at the Global Tournament in Knoxville, TN.   Globals will happen the week of May 22 so these kids have about 1 month to fundraise the costs for this once in a life time trip!!!  


This is Sarah Cecil, the BEST Destination Imagination Manager EVER!!!  Sarah donates her time (a lot of it) from October until March (and then even more time for States and now more for Globals) in order to make sure the kids learn how to work together as a team and have access to the things they need in order to make their dream of winning regionals and states happen.  Sarah hosts meetings at her home at least twice a week, drives kids to and from meetings and trips to the recycling center in order to get materials for prop making at a reasonable cost, she provides snacks, keeps seven 10 year olds on track and teaches them problem solving skills.  She does all of this with that same huge smile on her face and never gives up on these kids. She has the patience of a saint and is truly the Angel of our children's team!  Not to mention that she has a full-time job and 4 children of her own to run around to millions of activities.  Without her NONE of these Destination Imagination dreams would have come true.
Here are a few glimpses of the Lightening Bolts hard at work.  This year they created a story about a color vanishing from the world.  They did tons of research about color and light and the meanings of colors.  They then created a set and props and integrated a digital component and individual talents.  The picture above is of  them supporting each other just before going into their Instant Challenge, an on the spot challenge they must solve on the day of their competetion in addition to their central challenge.




To make it to Globals is an amazing feat!!!  It is a dream come true!  But, they won't be able to go without the help of family, friends, businesses, or the community.  If they can raise the funds they need  for attendance costs and travel, they will have the opportunity to meet with teams from all over the world who love working together and solving problems and challenges.
