Second-Hen’d is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization focused on re-homing spent hens while educating others and highlighting the benefits associated with “Chicken Therapy.” PTSD, anxiety, depression, ADHD, autism, and memory-loss are just some of the issues that have shown improvement when caring for chickens.
As disabled veterans, there is an understanding and feeling of purpose when we can save a life and watch it flourish – no matter what kind. We get it. Once our military service is over or compromised, we're considered "spent" and no longer valuable to the organization.
Spent hens are between 1.5 and 2-years-old when disposed of because they're no longer considered productive. In the U.S. alone, approximately 300 million egg-layers lose their lives each year as a result of this practice. If adopted, we can give these hens a further, meaningful purpose.
These birds often have very sweet and gentle personalities. When properly cared for, chickens can live up to 10 years (sometimes longer), and could lay for many more years.
We have worked hard to form positive, solid relationships with those we work with, and we focus on the BENEFITS of what we’re doing. Even though both sides may not agree on a chicken's worth, there's no reason we can't find common ground and work together for a good cause. There are plenty of amazing people who want this to happen! We currently have homes lined-up for over 2,700 hens throughout the state of Missouri and an egg producer willing to give us birds. Our major hold-up at this time is funding. In order to finally get these girls into their forever homes, we need to raise at least $5,000. The money will cover costs for transport, quarantine, feed, Veterinary care, etc.
