Tonight I’ve walked through my first snow in Berlin. While the first one of the season normally makes me traverse between feelings of some romantic magic of it and disgust by the cold white shit that makes city life harder, this time around I could only think of snowfall over the looming humanitarian disaster in the north of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Hundreds of refugees and migrants are stranded at the gateways of the EU, in an agonising place that doesn’t want them there, from which it is difficult to reach a more promising destination, and even harder to go back home. This dire situation isn’t really news, and has been an every day life in Bosnia for quite some months now, but the freezing weather are another game changer. I understand that these miserable circumstances are an interplay of geo-, EU-, and local politics, but let’s leave that aside for now and see it for what it is at the moment: a dreadful humanitarian crisis where with a bit of solidarity, we might make someone’s days just a bit better.
During their winter holidays, my cousin Sanjin and his friend Zarka are going to visit the makeshift refugee camps, and distribute winter clothing and food. This is their fifth round of such work, which was made possible by small and large donations of their networks of friends. They pay for the trip and their accommodation on their own. With a bit more than a month left, here I am appealing to my networks to skip a drink or two, and light up someone’s heart instead. Even a little bit of money could buy mittens that will warm up someone’s freezing hands.
If you can, please donate here. On December 21st (the of their travel), I will transfer the money to their account. I’ll be happy to share receipts that ensure the money ended up where it was supposed to go.
