Help the Pageau family rebuild

On April 28th, our house was flooded because a dike broke in our town.  In 30 minutes we had to evacuate, as the water was rising all around us.  We tried to lift a few object off the ground and carry the most immediately threatened things to the first floor:  computer,  official papers, picture albums, etc. In the end, we left our house with the clothes on our backs and water rushing under our feet.

Little did we know the dike could not be fixed. Within hours we had 7 feet of water in our basement and the entire street and neighbourhood were flooded. It was only 10 days later that we were able to pump the water out, completely strip the basement and throw out almost everything away as we received a contamination alert.

Our home insurance did not cover catastrophic flooding and so we are left to fend for ourselves.  Wonderful people have already donated to us through direct means and we will be able to receive some government help to fix the damage, but such an  indemnisation only replaces minimum amounts for the bare essentials and does not cover the extensive damage we have to face.

I am a self-employed artist who works at home and so I was doubly affected as my workshop was also full of water. The studio I had set up for filming videos in the basement was also ompletely destroyed.

On top of the damage to the house, workshop, studio, the furniture, washer, dryer, sewing machine, etc, we lost:

- Our entire library, hundreds of books, many rare art books on medieval art, symbolism and icons I need for work.

- We lost all our children's toys, games, books.

- We home school and lost all our material, manuals, reference books, art material.

- All sports, camping, outdoor equipment, such as sleeping bags, ski equipment, rollerblades and ice skates and many other .

- Weeks of work and revenue.

We will not be able to reintegrate the house for several months and so we have had to rent a temporary location while I also look for a place where I can start working on my carvings as soon as things settle down.

The governement has finally agreed to rebuild the dyke, but the city has told us to be patient as they are reevaluating the different flooded area to determine who should and should not rebuild.  Since our house is one of the lowest of our street, this leaves us with a great amount of uncertainty and risk for the future.   I have put an amount of 50,000, but this is almost arbitrary as the uncertainty is still so high that we have no idea how much we will need to climb out of our mess.

The funds gathered will be used to buffer this time of uncertainty, rebuild our life,  our homeschool practice, a basic library to continue my work and give us possibilities to find solutions for my workplace.

We thank you for your support of our family.  God bless you.
