What more could go wrong for the Costa’s?

Anne and John, both 72-years-old, Anne’s son, a full-time single father, Mike and Anne’s grandson 9-year-old Mikey are staying at the Quality Inn (Former Comfort Inn) in Seekonk this holiday season.

After experiencing a fire at their house on Central Ave in Seekonk, they have lost all of their possessions.  They rented the house and to answer the most common questions – yes, they had renters insurance.  However, the insurance company, which we will leave unnamed at this time, is not making it easy on them…  no word on the outcome yet.

They were put up at Extended Stay American in East Providence.  Five days later, fire alarms sounded, leaving Anne on the 3rd floor without a working elevator to exit the building.  If tensions were not running high enough at that point, the Costa’s family dog was mauled by two pit bulls and rushed to Bay State Veterinary Emergency Services.  No other dogs were injured.  Huge shout out to Bay State for helping the family out, reducing their bill to only a few hundred dollars.

Their dog suffered 8 puncture wounds, lost 2 teeth and was in pretty bad shape the first night but is doing better.  Also, huge thanks to Seekonk Animal Shelter who donated leashes, food, a bed and toys to the family!

After the situation, the family demanded that Anne is moved to the first floor.  They were then informed it was hotel policy to be asked to leave because of the altercation that took place between their dog and two other dogs.

Tonight the family nestles into their 3.5-star google rated hotel.

The days following the fire, the family was overwhelmed with gratitude for the community of Seekonk, Angles Care Closet, Aiken School, Red Cross, Catholic Social Services, Grady’s, Seekonk Animal Shelter, The Seekonk Library, Konk Konnect, Dick Sporting Goods, Welcoming Landscaping and the 100’s of people and business that have contributed to the GoFundMe and provided aid thus far.

We know that Mikey will be okay for Christmas!!!  There is enough sponsorship between Human Services, the School and the other businesses that have contacted the family.

The family cannot accept goods until they have found a place to go.  Please help them put something away to get them back into a home as fast as possible.  To allow them to replace their furniture, not their possessions, those will never be replaced.  To provide Anne with the handicap accessories she needs!

On Tuesday, December 4th at around 9 am, 20 minutes after the bus picked up 9-year-old Mikey Costa like any other day, a fire broke out at his Central Avenue home in Seekonk. In 20 minutes, the Costa's lost EVERYTHING.  The family and authorities are still unclear as to what caused the fire.

72-year-old Anna Costa, a lifelong resident of Seekonk, her partner for the last 30 years, 72-year-old John Cumming, her son, and full-time single father 37-year-old Michael Costa and grandson Mikey Costa have resided in this LEASED home for 8 years!

We need to help these individuals rebuild - not their home, it wasn't "theirs" per se... the landlord already has plans for the house and they will not be returning to it... they need help to rebuild their lives!

Although the fire started around the garage area, the smoke damage ruined everything that was in the home.  Every picture from the last 72 years, articles of clothing, electronics, furniture, etc...

(Anna bottom Center, Mikey to the right, Mike behind him, John likely taking the picture.)  The picture was taken with Sue, Anna's daughter, and her family.

I moved to the neighborhood over a year ago, my sister gave birth to Anna's great-grandson a little over a month ago.  I witnessed this heartbreaking event and it still brings tears to my eyes, thinking of how honest, loving and caring this family was and how they do NOT deserve this tragedy, especially in such a special time of the year.

On my children's first day of school, before they even knew my relation to their family, John and Mike saw me struggle with the kids in the morning and both volunteered to watch them at the bus stop, without hesitation, so I could get to work.  This is the kind of people you are helping!

Mike works non-stop for Lyft to keep his schedule flexible and pay the bills, John at 72 is always running around after Mikey to help out and takes care of Anna, who has difficulty walking, suffers from diabetes and congestive heart failure... in a very rare situation these days, I have watched these men worked tirelessly to take care of the home and the family.  My heart is broken for them!  How can we make it easier?!?

Red Cross has put them up for only 3 days at Extended Stay.  Let's see if we can raise them enough money to get them into a house quickly for the holidays and keep them in Seekonk for Mikey to continue at Aiken School!

They are in desperate and immediate need of new clothing and toiletries.  Gift cards are best to ensure proper sizing - although the men take 4XL and Anna takes a 4XL, Mikey is 12/14 boys and takes a 6.5 in shoes.  We are currently working to coordinate with Seekonk Human Services for a more comfortable drop off, in the interim, anything can be dropped off at Sue's house (Anna's daughter) at 39 Harman Avenue, Seekonk.  They have around the clock coverage for someone to be there to answer the door.

Sorry for the long story but my hope is to relay the message that THIS IS the type of family the deserves YOUR help!

Happy Holidays and God Bless you all!!!
