Knowledge is power. Based on some of the legislature going through Texas this year, it appears that many of our elected officials are not knowledgeable when it comes to transgender people and how policies can help or hurt them.

So let's educate them! We're raising funds to give a copy of Becoming Nicole by Amy Ellis Nutt to each of our 181 Texas State legislators as well as our Governor Greg Abbott and Lieut. Governor Dan Patrick. Becoming Nicole is the inspiring true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and an ordinary American family’s extraordinary journey to understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning science reporter for The Washington Post. A must-read if you're looking to understand the complexities of gender.

The books will be distributed on Monday, March 6 as part of the Texas Trans Lobby Day that's being hosted by the Trans Education Network of Texas (TENT) with support from ACLU Texas. Each copy is $12.50, and any size donation is greatly appreciated. If we exceed our goal, the funds will be used to help transport folks to the lobby day.

Please give what you can and spread the word! For more on Texas Trans Lobby Day:  http://www.transtexas.org/lobby-day-2017/

Thank you!

Hi all!

You may have heard, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called a special session that starts tomorrow, July 18th. One of the items on his agenda is the "bathroom bill" which he calls the "privacy act" and I call the "transgender discrimination act." Please be sure to call your Texas state representative and senator to urge them for a NO vote on any legislation that comes to the floor that would make Texas a(n even more) hostile place for transgender folks to live , learn, and work in.

In the regular session, the bill in question was called SB 6, but during Special Sessions, everything starts over. The bills that have been filed so far that address this issue are HB 46, HB 50, and SB 23. Make sure your legislators know that their constituents oppose any and all state-sponsored discrimination.

As you all likely know, SB6 (the bathroom bill) passed the Texas State Senate back in March. I was hoping that the more sensible State House of Representatives would let it die in committee, but it looks like its House companion HB 2899 is gaining support in the House, as reported by Patrick Svitek on Friday: https://www.texastribune.org/2017/04/28/patrick-expresses-support-house-companion-bathroom-bill/.

Please call your state representative this week and ask them 1) if they read the book and 2) how they'll vote on HB 2899 if it comes up for a vote. If your Rep votes FOR discrimination, make sure they know you will VOTE THEM OUT!

I have a friend whose adult son is transitioning to his female identity. I hope this donation helps a Texas legislator how profound this is in many lives.
