Click here to check out recent KQED coverage on our work in Texas Thanks to many of you, we have been able to travel to Texas to directly help families who are seeking asylum in this country. I am about to embark on my third trip. Like you, I have felt devastated by the images and stories of children being separated from their parents /relatives. Being able to work directly with families helps put my counseling skills into use. This process also seems to be healing my own family's generational immigration trauma as well.
I have been able to meet with families both inside a detention center and when they are released from detention. I want you to know that these parents leave their country seeking safety and life for their children. The parents I have met have risked everything to make sure their children can survive death and live (even if it means separating at the border). Their stories are heartbreaking. The conditions in which they are detained are inhumane and traumatic as well. My work has involved providing them with information about what the asylum seeking process involves. Most importantly, I have been able to provide them with some emotional support and hope. Your donations can help buy food, toys, and other necessities for those released from family detention.
