Help Support Denton Firefighter Gary Weiland

Brothers, Sisters, Family and Friends,

I'm here to tell you a story about Gary Weiland.   Gary is a hard-working, dedicated firefighter that has been a valued member of the Denton Fire Department for seven years.  On Thanksgiving morning, 2018, just a mere three days ago, a series of events began to occur that thrust this married father of four into a life-changing fight that he and his family could have never prepared for.

Gary began working for the Denton Fire Department in 2011, dedicating his young life to the service of the citizens of Denton. Gary enjoys physical fitness and sports of all types, and as a firefighter, has a very stressful, physically demanding job.  Two years ago, Gary injured his knee and had to have knee replacement surgery.  Although the surgery appeared to be a success,  he has continued to have complications ever since.

While out with friends and family during the Thanksgiving holiday, he felt that he was again having an episode where his knee/leg was going to swell.  He was taken to the Medical City of Denton Emergency Room, where it was determined that there was no circulation to his lower left leg.  Emergency surgery was immediately performed, and it was discovered that a foreign body had occluded the artery behind his knee.  In exploring the arteries in his lower leg, surgeons removed clotting and bypassed the artery but could not ever get blood flow past his lower calf.  Another exploratory surgery was performed on Gary’s foot to exhaust other options.  Gary spent a collective 13+ hours in surgeries. Unfortunately, by this point, the muscular tissue in his lower leg and foot were essentially ‘dead’, and amputation just below his knee was the only remaining solution.

This has obviously been a devastating loss for Gary and his family.  The amputation of his lower leg places not only his quality of life in jeopardy, but also a career in the noble profession he has work toward his entire adult life.  He is the doting father of four beautiful and active children, and is a loving and devoted husband to his wife of 17 years, Shanna Weiland.  She is a coach and teacher for Denton ISD at Crownover Middle School.

The Weiland family would covet your prayers during Gary’s recovery, and as they try to navigate this next chapter of their lives, essentially figuring out their “new normal.”  In addition, the Denton Firefighter’s Association has set up this GoFundMe account on behalf of Gary and his family in order to defray some of their medical bills and injury-related expenses.  Any monetary gifts to that account are greatly appreciated.
