Help Support Chris Mathews & Family

$74,750 of $100,000 goal

On Saturday 9/8/18, Chris was assaulted in a terrible random act of violence in San Francisco, leading to significant head trauma, hemorrhaging, and multiple skull fractures.  He was transferred to Zuckerberg SF General where he was treated for his injuries and was released for rehab on 9/12/18.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Chris has shown good motor skills recovery. However, his memory continues to be a work in progress where some days are better than others. Chris has a long road to recovery, but we want Chris, Rebecca, and their 2 children to know that they have our support!

I’ve put together this GoFundMe for the many expenses (medical, child care, meal services, time off work, babysitting, etc.) that will come with the long journey ahead. It’s hard for any of us to know what the family is going through, but we can all imagine the emotional, physical, and financial burden this incident will impart on the Mathews family and this is an easy way that we can help.

While we ask that you give Chris’ family some privacy, you can send the family your love and support by:

- Supporting this GoFundMe and sharing this page
- Sending Chris something for his room! (message me for address)
- Sending the kids a toy or book! (message me for address)
- Sending the nurses at the rehab center some snacks! (message me for address)

Thank you to EVERYONE that has already helped the Mathews family so far. To the medical staff at Zuckerberg SF General… thank you so much for taking care of our friend. We are all praying for good results through the intensive rehab process he is going through and will try to post updates on his progress as we get them.

Rebecca, stay strong! You and Chris have a lot of support behind you, we love you both!

Update 9/30/18:
WOW! We hit $46,000!!! Will have a more in depth update later, but just wanted to write a little bit here to start. Chris is still at his rehab center working with great doctors and nurses around the clock and making good, forward progress. Rebecca is doing a lot of research on where Chris will need to go to next. Thank you so much for all recent support after this story has hit the news! More detailed updates soon!

Please note, no item shall be received in return for donations or gifts to this campaign. Thank you for your support!

We have some great news! Chris has been released from the Center for Neuro Skills and he will be headed home where he will continue his outpatient care!!! THANK YOU all for your thoughts and prayers over the last several weeks, it has definitely helped.

A note from Rebecca:

“I want to personally thank every person who has followed us on our journey. I am so grateful to be surrounded by so many people who truly care. Thank you for all donations, gifts, messages, letters, and visits. The outpour of support has been tremendous and has made a huge difference in Chris’ recovery. As we move into November, there is so much to be thankful for. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

Chris has made tremendous progress over the last month and getting him into the best rehab center for his condition was made financially possible by the support on this GoFundMe. Funds from this campaign are also going towards his outpatient care so there is still work to be done! We are all pulling for Chris to keep recovering so please continue to have Chris and Rebecca in your thoughts as the journey is not over yet!

Also, I'd like to say thank you to Rebecca for being a true warrior throughout this whole process and being there for Chris. We all know Chris from different points in our lives, but none of us have had to endure like Rebecca has over the last several weeks. Our hats off to you Rebecca! THANK YOU and continue to stay strong!

Today (10/9/18) Chris will be moving to the Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS) as part of the next stage in his recovery. Rebecca wanted me to say a huge THANK YOU to all of you for your generosity on this campaign. The funds from this campaign will be used directly for the attention and care that Chris needs at CNS. Chris' medical insurance does not cover the majority of the costs for his rehab at CNS and the cost per day is jaw dropping.

With that being said, Rebecca is extremely thankful for everything we have done on this campaign. I'm so happy that we started this without knowing what Chris' condition was because this is one of the best ways we can support him. CNS is the best neuro skills center in the area and I'm very happy he's getting the BEST care he can get. This stage of recovery is not something we should compromise on.

Over the last week, a few of us have been able to visit Chris for short periods of time and it has been great to see him! When I visited I didn't get a chance to take any photos, but his room was filled with all of your care packages! Rebecca has even had to take some stuff home to make space. If I gave you his address to send care packages, please refrain from sending anything because he will no longer be at that center.

Conversation with Chris was good and it was great to see him in person. It was nice to just sit with him and enjoy his company for a few hours. His memory recovery is progressing well so conversation flows well. The next stage of his recovery at CNS is focused on his decision making skills that the frontal lobes of the brain are responsible for. This is where he needs the most help with his recovery and it is pivotal for his return home. I will have more updates on his new center, logistics, etc. in the future. Because of the costs of CNS, I've increased the goal for this campaign. I'm praying he does not have to stay longer than his estimated time there.

Once again, THANK YOU so much for your participation on this campaign. Please, please, please, continue to like and share this campaign! Let's keep this going because the Mathews family still needs our support!

I am absolutely floored by the generosity and support from everyone out there! After hitting the news, we have raised over $53,000 for the Mathews family! Simply, amazing! The outpouring of support not only shows in the amount of money raised, but also your messages. It makes me so happy to know that Chris and Rebecca have such a strong network of people that support them. Let's keep this thing going!!!

Chris is continuing to make forward progress at his rehab clinic. There is a chance that he may be moving to a new center for different treatment within the week. If you plan on sending a care package to his current rehab center address that I've given you, feel free to message me to see if that still works out timing wise. Attached is a photo of Chris from a few days ago.

Rebecca is currently researching all the possible solutions to give Chris his best shot at recovery while juggling everything else around this incident. Our biggest thanks go to her for holding down the fort and helping our friend get through his recovery. Thank you to all the family, friends, doctors, nurses, reporters, police officers, and donors involved in this campaign as well as Chris' every day well being. Without all of you, this would not be possible. Your kindness and generosity is amazing!

If I have smaller day to day updates, I'll edit the campaign's main description.

WE HIT $25,000!!! WOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH for all of your support since this campaign started! I've been syncing up with Rebecca and the first thing she always asks is how she can thank everyone. I've told her not to worry about that now and that her strength, focus, and attention should be on Chris, herself, and her family. So on behalf of Rebecca I want to say thank you to everyone that has donated, sent care packages to Chris, sent toys to the kids, sent food to Rebecca, written in well wishes, and prayed for Chris so far! Rebecca has all of you in her thoughts and is very appreciative for the support.

Chris continues to make progress on a daily basis, but this is a critical week with his recovery to determine what type of care he will need after his stay at his current rehab center. His memory continues to improve every day and he is getting the very best care. We sent him something small each day of this week ranging from magazines to basketball cards to help occupy his down time and to show that he has people out there that are thinking of him. Who doesn't love a small care package?

The police investigation continues to make progress this week, but no suspect has been found yet. There is a chance the police take this story to the media once they can get a sketch and some approvals. If that happens I'm hoping this campaign can also gain some more traction. Rebecca is also talking with the department on a frequent basis.

With that being said, I really want to continue to push this campaign even further even though we've hit our goal. It is almost guaranteed that Chris will need more neuro skills therapy after his current rehab program and the added weight of that financially, emotionally, and logistically is going to be a tremendous burden. I know that there is another campaign for the family and I have reached out to try and consolidate the funds for our campaigns. It would be great if we could do that, increase the goal, and really push this campaign to it's full potential. I'm going to leave our current goal as-is in case I can get a hold of the other campaign manager and do all the changes at once. So please continue to share this campaign!

Once again, thank you so much for all of your love, prayers, and support!
