Last week our dear friend Channy Leaneagh of POLIÇA fell and broke her back while trying to fight off this brutal winter and the ice dams it created on her roof. Thankfully she is expected to make a full recovery and is already walking a bit with the help of a very fashionable back brace, but the mounting medical bills, need for ongoing childcare, and inability to work or perform for the next four to five months has created quite a financial burden. We’ve set up this GoFundMe page so that Channy can put 100% of her focus into getting back to full strength without the added stress and worry that these costs carry with them. We’ll make sure to keep you updated on her recovery throughout the coming months. Thank you so much for your help and support!

Dear ALL!

I am laying in an overwhelmingly bright light of support, encouragement and love.
Thank you thank you!! I’m so grateful and inspired.

It’s been a week and 3 days since my ladder fell backwards and I dropped off my roof onto the concrete sidewalk.
I am a very active and independent person; for those of you that don’t know me well. I went to work that morning as a nursing assistant and all day at work I was thinking about shoveling and roof raking after work. I like to stay busy; especially in the winter when the heaviness of the clouds, the absence of the sun and the inability to run fast anywhere gets my head all dark and slow. I had been shoveling all week like everyone else in the Midwest and I was also getting good at throwing panty hose stuffed with calcium chloride onto the ice dams to melt pathways into the dams. I was getting the hang of it and thought I had a chance at preventing an expensive leak.

When I dropped to the ground I heard my back compress and it was an instant jolt of pain. It felt like my back was ringing and I was yelling and writhing. But it was very cold last Thursday; no one was walking by or trying to be outside. I knew I had to go get my phone which I had left in my car; parked in the garage in the back yard. I hadn’t planned on being in the front long: I had been raking the roof all week on the ladder and I hadn’t had a problem before; I was gonna be quick and then go pick up my son from school.

I’ve been trained to never move a person after they fall-they can be injured more. Since I feel on my back and the pain was up my spine I was thinking it was a bad idea to crawl to the garage But also i would freeze outside waiting for someone to find me.

I moved slow, sliding one leg in front of the other resting on my forearms. I was thinking about an ambulance or a few friends who could pick me up. Like many in this country I was afraid of an ambulance because I imagined it would cost 10,000.00 and I had 560.00 in the bank.
Once the phone was in my hand I couldn’t think straight-who should I call?
My husband was out of town and I didn’t have family in Minnesota anymore. Who would be working...As soon as I called my husband he called a bunch of people and then I called my manager and everyone said “call 911”. By now my pain was so intense and I was shaking so bad from the cold and adrenaline I couldn’t make it up the back stairway into the house.
Soon friends were standing over my head over and the ambulance arrived and helped warm me up and settle down.
I stayed three nights at the hospital and family and friends swooped in to care for my kids.
I got cat scans, xrays, back brace and PT to learn how to do what I can for the next 4 months.

When I was in the hospital it hurt so much just to lie still. I know there are many people out there who live with that kind of pain everyday with no relief. I send them all my love and strength today.
I couldn’t imagine putting weight on my feet or even sitting up in bed but the medical team at north memorial was great and they were like “you can and you will”—and forced me to be brave. It’s weird how in one injury you can feel all your bravery slip away and it really helps to have people around you to say; you’re okay, you can and also have to use your legs again.

Now I am at home and my pain has improved astonishingly! I’m so grateful to all the supplements people suggested and the acupuncture NE Wellness brought to my house one day! I can feel my body getting stronger, not being so sensitive to pain and the heaviness lifting from my eyes with the support and encouragement from all of you!

This has been a rough winter (rough time for a while) for many people; I’m humbled knowing that many are in much worse conditions and situations than my own. I will never forget the grace and empathy I was treated with; it’s something all people deserve! I will focus on healing properly so I can pay this kindness and love forward.
I can’t do nursing assistant work for the next 4 months (although I am my own nursing assistant now) but I can write songs. I am filled with so much love from everyone; it’s a very inspiring place to hold a pen from.

With so much sincere gratitude and peace I say thank you!! Be well ALL ❤️

Love,

Channy Leaneagh
