Help SPECTOR Launch His New Freedom of Speech-Themed Dark Anthology!

Hi All,

This has rapidly become my What Spector Did On His Stage Four Cancer Vacation, but sometimes an idea for a project hits you one pleasant Friday afternoon, and just takes off like it had a mind of its own.

This is one of those times.

It came from several things bouncing off each other IRL – mostly on social media, with regards to free speech and freedom of expression in these turbulent times.  One writer I know of posted a longish Facebook rant that was eloquent and yet clearly picking a fight.  I know those fights all too well, though in my current health status I have to limit my intake of toxins, even of the purely mental or emotional kind.  But I know this much, too:

That particular flavor of fight? It never. Ever. Ends.

But still, I wondered, there has to be a better way?

I commented and suggested maybe he should do an anthology themed on freedom of speech?  He didn’t take the bait.  I suggested it again.  No go.  So then I posted up and said, never mind, I’ll do it.  And I messaged him saying, I was serious, and would he like to submit a story?

And thus, FREEDOM OF SCREECH! was born.

I started on Friday April 21, and by Sunday April 23, I had over a dozen contributors.  Today is Sunday, April 30, and I have over two dozen authors aboard.  And I haven’t even opened the book to open submissions yet.

My original vision was for 10-12 stories, the payment for which would come from my own pocket, and which was about as much as a Stage Four cancer-fighting editor could swing.

Then it started to blow up (in a good way) – so many diverse and talented writers, so many stories to tell! But it was way beyond what I could afford.  And it became time to turn to crowdfunding… and gofundme.

Last year, upon realizing my cancer diagnosis and its life-altering severity (and losing my job for it) I turned to gofundme for help.  The response was amazing – and the level of friendship, concern, and care I received from friends and fans both stunned and humbled me to this day.

I would like to bring some of that energy to this: an exciting and genuinely cool publishing project, and a high road of sorts out of the endlessly divisive morass that so marks our shared culture, and times.

FREEDOM OF SCREECH! promises to be a powerful and beautiful book, from some of the most imaginative intellects working in dark fiction, and in the real world, today.  Or any other day.

And now it comes to you, gentle reader:  I wish for your participation, and help, in bringing this project to reality.  I have a publisher whom I trust, and a truly formidable lineup.

What I need now, is you.

Join the party.   Help this noble project come to life.

There are perks, of course – ebooks, and print books, and even upcoming select FREEDOM OF SCREECH! merch!

And, cuz, why not, even the brand new music album by yours truly -- CRAIG SPECTOR: RESURRECTION ROAD, which is slated to drop in June 2017 -- will be in the perk lineup.

All to hopefully entice and beguile you to contribute to this very worthy project.

But also, to join in this fleeting, meeting of the raucous tribes.  Which, having read this, I hope you will do.

Because you, too, are invited.

And, as ever, I thank you for all your care, concern, and support.

All Best,

Craig Spector

Hi all,

Happy March, as March rolls on... hope all is well with you! I am doing well, and Freedom of Screech is slowly taking a fine shape. But there are still a few opportunities left to join the FOS crew....

To repeat an update from earlier this month:

As it happens, a few (very few) slots have opened in my Freedom of Screech dark fiction antho!

Current contributors include amazing stories by Norman Spinrad, Elizabeth Massie, Tom Monteleone, Matt Hayward, Jessica McHugh, Chet Williamson, Patricia Lee Macomber, Mercedes Yardley, Richard Christian Matheson, and more.... but now could be your chance, too!

FREEDOM OF SCREECH is a freedom of speech-themed anthology for these turbulent times: a balls 'n' ovaries out, all in(clusive), go big or go home antho for the dark of heart. This is no holds barred freedom of expression and imagination. A meeting of the raucous tribes of badassery -- liberal, conservative, and across the sundry spectrums of all things dark and twisted and timely.

All are free to submit -- but bring your A game, kids, 'cuz anything less just won't cut it. Feel free to be as political as fuck...or not, as you see fit. Take an issue of the day (or any other days) that you are passionate about, and burn for it.

Payment is $100US on signing, plus 50% of net royalties. If you're interested, send your story word doc or pdf form to freedomofscreech2017 at gmail.

***

So if you're interested, bring your best game, and take your shot! That said, and given some of the submissions I've received since the last notice, I feel compelled to add: whatever your story is, it HAS to feature some examination of the concept of FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

This caveat comes because a few would-be contributors appear to have simply dusted off an unsold trunk story and tossed it over the transom -- uhm, sorry, but, no. I won't buy it, and you're basically wasting both of our time.

Regarding the everpresent concept of diversity -- the antho is and will be diverse. This however includes diversity of thought: putatively conservative as well as liberal voices are invited and welcome. A radical unto heretical thought these days, perhaps, but hey, we like to live on the edge.

Cheers!

Halloween update!

Hi All,

We're coming up on the Oct 31st deadline for open submissions to Freedom of Screech, my freedom of speech-themed dark fiction anthology.

I've gotten some fantastic stories in from Norman Spinrad, Matt Hayward, Tom Montelene, Elizabeth Massie, Jessica McHugh, and others, but there are still a (very) few slots left.

So far the antho is surprising, engrossing, and (politically, socially) diverse -- covering ground from the modern to the historically-tinged, and a wide spectrum of viewpoints... but they all share an intensity and ferocity of vision that's a pleasure to behold.

If you're one of the fantastic authors who have already promised stories but haven't yet sent them in, consider this a friendly nudge from your humble editor -- I'm looking forward to reading what you bring to the show!

And if you're thinking of submitting but have held off, bring your A+ game, and don't be shy. If you have a dark, edgy, freedom of speech-themed idea that's burning to be set loose, fire it up and send it over!

Cheers,
Craig Spector

It's funny -- putting together an anthology, you invariably encounter stories that need work, stories that need a lot of work, stories that no amount of work will make them work...

...and then you get a story from someone like Elizabeth Massie.

My first reaction was, wow. Followed by, wowwww.

Followed by, dammmmmmmmnnnn.

Oh yeah, this is gonna be fun. ;)
