hey y'all, I'm a black trans artist from Chicago living in New York, and I recently had my first consultation regarding the expenses and timeline of my transition. I'm raising money for gender-affirming medical processes in pursuit of a new sense of belonging in my physical being. Bearing markers of both gender non-conformance and black racialization, my being is constantly under scrutiny. With increasing anti-trans policy pressure from the state, not to mention the mind-boggling violence endured by black trans women daily, urgency is ingrained into my survival. I am endlessly thankful for my chosen family of siblings, mentors and loved ones for supporting me in my transition up until now, and I'm deeply grateful for every contribution.

Hey loves!

Here to give an update on where I am at.
I wouldn’t change a thing about my transition, no matter the sacrifices. Every share, donation and exchange has deeply impacted my life, and as a result of starting hrt, I find myself reflective, calmer, and more rooted in my entire being. However, since starting this journey, I have received numerous threats both from people and systemic infrastructures. My abusive biological father, who has not been in my life for years, has tracked me down and is gas-lighting and harassing me. I have blocked him time and time again, but the fake accounts just keep coming. This is a stressor not just on me, but also on my mom back home in Chicago. I am blessed to have her unconditional love, and I'm endlessly grateful to my chosen family of siblings, parents and friends.

Prior to starting hrt, as some may be aware, I had been wrestling with my school’s financial aid department, despite receiving a full-ride scholarship. This problem intensified once I began to pursue an internship under an artist for school credit in the NYU drama department. My internship credit did not appear in my school’s system right away, so they mislabeled me as a part-time student. Because of this mistake, I almost lost my school health insurance/medical support for my transition. To make matters worse, the artist I was interning with ghosted me, which put me in another precarious position where I had to improvise credentials that would fulfill my internship credit to avoid losing my healthcare and indefinitely halting my transition. Once my internship credit registered, I was overcharged in fees that totaled $8,800, and forced to forfeit my scholarship refund from this semester. Week after week I have been planning, negotiating, and working in order to continue. It's been extremely important to not blame myself in these situations. Black trans women are put into precarious situations on a daily basis, and prioritizing myself has been a mode of survival. I’ve been feeling shaky, proud, and abundant all at once-I couldn’t be more happier with my body, and I am feeling free in ways I never have. Deep thank yous all around. I'm still saving toward getting electrolysis and healthcare co-pays rack up, so please keep contributing, sharing and boosting as widely as you can.

Much Love,

Sol
