My husband Al and I believe in paying the bills that we make. Unfortunately, our financial difficulties snowballed on us since we adopted two children from a Lithuanian orphanage.
We came to the point that we must refinance our home to afford monthly payments. We are being denied refinancing because of our credit card debts, which accumulated during past 14 years by paying our children's medical bills.
When in 2002 we adopted a 3 year old girl Maria and a 5 months old boy John, upon their arrival to USA, we learned that kids require extensive treatment for their vision disability. It has been 14 years of weekly doctor’s visits only partially covered by our insurance. Both children are still in serious need, but we can't afford any visits to the doctor any more.
Unfortunately, we have no immediate or extended family we could turn to. We have no assets to extract the money from, but our house in Warrenton, VA. Even if we sell, the net proceeds from the house would not satisfy the total sum. The reality is that we need to resolve this debt with what we have, so today we are facing bankruptcy.
We are heartbroken at the prospect of losing our home: that's why we are here pleading for help.
We do realize it is a long shot, but we are in a desperate situation - we can only count on the kindness of others. Every tiny bit can make a difference.
With true gratitude,
Al and Daiva
