Help Save Lexie

£400 of £2,500 goal

Our Cavalier Spaniel Lexie has been rushed to intensive care in Rosemary Lodge Veterinary Hospital after suffering a severe infection of the uterus, which has spread via her bloodstream to her lungs. She has already had emergency surgery which has removed the infected organ but the infection on her lungs is extremely serious. She now has a hole in her lung which needs to heal and she may need further surgery. The intensive care vet says she is a little fighter and may well pull through, so we are going ahead with treatment.

We are now facing a bill upwards of £4000. Funds will be used towards paying this. I need the money asap, but will be faced with paying this bill off for the next three years.

I was left with Lexie after a relationship breakdown. She was very sick at the time (I think she was puppy farmed) and nearly died in the first week - but she pulled through. She also has a pre-existing heart problem due to her breed. Because of these issues I have been unable to get affordable insurance for her.

Lexie has been the light of my life ever since I got her and I can't bear the thought of life without her. She has been my constant companion through depression and illness of my own and has often been the reason I have got up in the morning.  When she wags her tail I remember that there is something good in the world despite the way it often seems. There is no way I am going to give up on this dog due to financial pressures, even though I am in irregular work and can't afford a massive bill like this.

Any assistance, no matter how small, will be very gratefully received. I would be overwhelmed and delighted to think that someone might have seen this plea for help and wanted to do something to help me try to save my beloved dog.

Lexie is still home and slowly improving, though it will be a very long journey until she is properly well again. She still has very little appetite, though she is eating, and she is sometimes sick. It looks as if her throat was damaged at some point - either by the infection or the tube the vet put down her throat during the operation. Maybe both. Nevertheless, right now she is an extremely lucky little dog.
Last night I was speaking on the phone with one of the lovely hospital vets at Rosemary Lodge, and she told me that, all in all, Lexie has had SEPSIS - a terrible disease that can be fatal in humans, never mind tiny Cavalier spaniels. It will take her weeks to recover (as it would a human) and she may never get back to her original self. But who knows - she could come close, though I doubt her bark will ever be the same again.
I have to thank everyone who has donated to this fundraiser so far. Please continue to share it as far and wide as possible - I am now stuck with paying off the mother of all vets' bills (which could still get bigger if she needs ongoing medical care).

Lexie is home, on tons of medications and in need of a lot of nursing. But she is almost certainly going to pull through now. She's tired, still not eating properly and has lost about half a kg of weight overall (a lot for a little Cavalier). Heart scans and other results are pending... I will continue to post updates as her condition improves.

Thanks to everyone who has donated so far. PLEASE continue to SHARE this - Lexie may be home but this is only the start of paying the massive vets bill I have had to run up in order to save her life.

We went to visit the Lex in hospital today and as you can see from the photograph she was quite bright. The tubes are from the drip and chest drain that she is connected to for 23 hours a day at the moment, but she was able to be disconnected while we were spending time with her.

So far, she's stable in Intensive Care - not better, but at least she's not worse. Will post another update later. It's still pretty critical, but there is hope.
