Rui is loosing his smile and you can help him getting it back.
Rui has been working as a visual artist for the last 13 years with the project name DEVIR. He is also an independent curator and producer of art exhibitions. You can see some of his work here:

I am very fortunate to have him in my life, he is the sweetest person I have ever met. He puts great passion in his work and he is always supporting new artists to follow their artistic work.
Rui loves doing what he does, even though it doesn't make a lot of money. He also loves talking to people. But when he can't it's devastating both personally and financially. And that's what's happening now.
During his last art exhibition a tooth just fell out, Rui started to loose his teeth. So this last month he finally made an appointment to see a dentist. But, because of his financial situation, it was his first dentist's visit in over 3 years. He literally spent the past couple of years in constant mouth pain from overall gum disease. So off course - he knew it wasn't going to be good.
The good news is, the dentist didn't charge us for the appointment. The bad news is, Rui has "advanced periodontal disease" - basically, he lost so much bone in the upper jaw, his teeth don't have anything to hold on to. So they will continue to fall out unless he does something about it.
Unfortunately, that "something" is pulling out ALL his upper and bottom teeth (well, the ones that haven't already fallen out) and putting in implants - 4 for the upper jaw and 4 for the bottom jaw.
The recommended treatment is:
1. Upper jaw all-on-4 implants with temporary dental prosthetic:
Date 18 June 2018, cost: €5000,
to be paid €2500 at the operation day,
and then 1x payment of €1250 to be paid until 18.July 2018
1x payment €1250 to be paid by 17 August 2018.
2. Lower jaw all-on-4 implants with temporary dental prosthetic:
Date between August -September 2018: €5000
with similar payments; 1x €2500 on the day of the surgery,
1x €1250 30 days after the surgery,
1x €125060 days after the surgery
3. In June 2019 after healing, both temporary dental prosthetics should be substitute by the definitive ones, €2500 each.
That's a minimum of $15000 for the all treatment.
Like most of you, we don't have that kind of money just lying around. Rui is also unlikely to ever be able to afford the procedure. So his teeth will just continue to get worse and worse and eventually, fall out.
As you can understand, this is also psychologically devastating. Rui has been struggling with these news for the past month. Just the thought of someone pulling out all his teeth has had us really scared for some days.
It's also Rui's responsibility for not taking care of himself. Even though he is a regular brusher, it is not enough, especially for people like him who are in the "risk group" and are more likely than others to contract this disease.
We are looking at other options - dentures, etc. But regardless of the decision made and the procedure done, it all costs money. Money we simply don't have.
Several friends have suggested we start this campaign. Those of you who know him know how hard this is. Many of his friends (rightfully) pointed out he needs to "swallow his pride and send an email to get funds". He already did that and now I am helping him with this campaign. 10 June it's his birthday and I really wanted to do whatever I can to support him reaching this goal.
We need to raise:
- €2500 by 18th June
-€2500 by 17th August
- €5000 until the end of October
- €5000 by June 2019 for the definitive prosthetics.
That is why we are starting with 1/3 of the campaign.

Sou muito grata por o ter na minha vida, é das pessoas mais doces que conheço e um coração aberto e sincero. Trabalha de forma apaixonada e isso nota-se no trabalho lindíssimo que produz. Não tem medo de explorar novas estéticas, técnicas e essa heterogeneidade é o que o torna único. Também costuma dar apoio a todas as pessoas que o abordam com o objectivo de seguir um trabalho artístico.
O Rui adora o que faz, apesar de não conseguir fazer muito dinheiro. Ele também adora as pessoas e adora falar com elas. E quando essa oportunidade se esvai, é desmoralizador, tanto pessoal como financeiramente. E isto é o que está a acontecer.
Durante a sua última exposição de Arte - ENTRESPAÇOS, caiu-lhe um dente perfeitamente saudável, basicamente, o Rui começou a perder os seus dentes. Deste modo, no mês passado, finalmente conseguimos marcar uma consulta no dentista. Desde há 3 anos que não ía ao dentista, devido à sua situação financeira; passou os últimos dois anos com dor de dentes e com as gengivas inflamadas. Por isso sabíamos que não iria ser pêra doce.
As boas notícias é que o dentista não nos cobrou pela consulta. As más notícias é que o Rui tem "periodontite avançada" - basicamente, ele perdeu tanto osso no maxilar superior e inferior, que os dentes não têm onde se agarrar. E por isso irão cair ao longo do tempo, a menos que se faça alguma coisa rapidamente.
Infelizmente essa "alguma coisa " é retirar todos os dentes (os que ainda não caíram) e colocar implantes dentários que são a melhor forma de fazer face ao problema - serão 4 no maxilar superior e 4 no maxilar inferior.
O tratamento recomendado é:
1. Maxilar superior all-on-4 implantes com prótese dentária temporária de forma a permitir a cicatrização das gengivas.
Data 18 Junho 2018, custo: €5000,
para ser pago em 3 tranches:
- 1x €2500 no dia da cirurgia (18 de Junho)
- 1x €1250 até 18.Julho 2018
- 1x €1250 até 17 Agosto 2018.
2. Maxilar inferior all-on-4 implantes com prótese dentária temporária de forma a permitir a cicatrização das gengivas.
Data Agosto/Setembro 2018, custo: €5000
para ser pago de forma similar:
- 1x €2500 no dia da cirurgia
- 1x €1250 pago até 30 dias após a cirurgia
- 1x €1250 pago até 60 dias após a cirurgia
3. Em Junho de 2019 após cicatrização, ambas as próteses temporárias terão de ser substituidas pelas definitivas, €2500 cada uma.
Isto perfaz um mínimo de €15000 para todo o tratamento.
Como todos vós, nós não temos essa quantia e sem esta campanha é pouco provável que o Rui consiga suportar esta intervenção. Por isso os seus dentes irão ficar sem aderência e eventualmente irão cair com o passar do tempo.
Como podem compreender o Rui confrontou-se com estas notícias no último mês. Só a ideia de alguém tirar todos os seus dentes tem sido assustadora.
Obviamente que é sua total responsabilidade não tratar de si próprio. Devia ter ido ao dentista no instante em que começou a ter problemas nos dentes. Não foi suficiente ter escovado bem os dentes ao longo dos anos, quando a periodontite aparece, é necessário atacar de imediato o problema.
Estamos a investigar todas as opções desde as dentaduras acrílicas, etc. Mas independentemente da decisão acerca de qual a melhor hipótese, tudo custa muito dinheiro. Dinheiro esse que nós não temos.
Muitos amigos do Rui (acertadamente) sugeriram que ele "engolisse o seu orgulho e enviasse um email de forma a conseguir ajuda". Ele já o fez e tem estado a explicar a situação a quem queira saber mais detalhes. Neste momento estou a ajudá-lo com esta campanha. O seu aniversário é dia 10 de Junho e eu gostava de fazer tudo o que estivesse ao meu alcance para o ajudar a conseguir atingir este objectivo.
Precisamos de angariar:
- €2500 até 18 de Junho
- €2500 até 17th Agosto.
- €5000 até fim de Outubro.
- €5000 até Junho de 2019 para as próteses definitivas.
