Help Replace Greg's Stolen Bike

’Tis the Season to Help out a fellow Rider / Trail Builder

2 weeks ago, local Fraser Valley Trail Builder, Greg Martins aka Builder Greg, had his brand new Rocky Mountain Slayer 750 stolen in Abbotsford. It was locked up, but that rarely stops a thief from taking your goods if they want them and have the time to get through your security. While many of us were initially worried that someone was targeting mountain bikers, there was security camera footage of the thief rooting through a truck prior to seeing the bike and finding a way to steal it. Unfortunately, the footage does nothing to show what the thief looks like. We live in a pretty good town, folks, but there are bad people everywhere.

Now I’m here to ask you to think about what we can do to help out a builder, in need, that gives so selflessly to us, as a trail user group. Do you like riding Junkyard Zombie, Upper Da Plow, Nu Speed, Mr.Uppity, Dead Reckoning, Guava Jelly, and JZ Jr.? If you answered yes to even one of those trails then you have Greg to thank for his hundreds of hours of volunteer time that have brought these awesome trails to fruition.

If you are asking yourself “What about insurance or buyer’s protection?”, here’s how some of this works. Greg is the kind of guy that thinks about others and he asked his local shop if they get charged fees if he pays with a card or if they would prefer if he went to the bank for the money. Since businesses lose %’s of sales when we, as consumers use cards, Greg came back with cash from the bank for his new bike. While this was great for the shop, it means that you as a buyer have no purchase protection from your credit card supplier on big-ticket items, like new bikes. And more, unfortunately, the bike was so new that he didn’t have it insured yet. I hope that answers your questions about why we’re reaching out to the community for aid and not relying on insurance or other facets for replacement help.

The question that I want you to ask is - “What is your trail experience worth to you?

For me, I moved here to be able to ride trails like those that Greg has built and it means so much to myself and those around me; having such an accessible area to enjoy, so close to home. Knowing that I am not alone in this (benefitting from Greg’s good nature), I am reaching out to the community as a whole - bikers, trail runners, hikers, birders, dog walkers, we have all benefited and I am asking for those of us that can do something, to do just that - Help a fellow rider out with a small token of thanks, cause we know that he’s done a ton for us.

All donations will go towards replacing Greg’s stolen bike. If we surpass the replacement value, any additional funds raised will be donated to the FVMBA for future trail projects in the Fraser Valley. This is the best Trail Karma that you could help out with, at this time. Thanks, everyone and thanks, Greg.
