English Language for Refugees

ACTION NOW: NYC IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES NEED YOUR HELP!

SUPPORT RIVERSIDE LANGUAGE PROGRAM

English language proficiency is the single most important factor leading to employment and successful integration of immigrants into the life of a community.   But 1.7 million immigrants, refugees, and asylees can't access the services they need to learn sufficient English.

 YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

For almost 40 years the Riverside Language Program (RLP) has been the only FREE, full-time, immersive English program in New York City.   Now, due to a staggering loss of over half of its federal funding, Riverside is being forced to scale back the number of English classes and critical support services it offers - just when those services are needed most.  These deep funding cuts will limit our ability to provide the essential supports immigrants need to secure job opportunities, earning power, and social and political participation.

Our immersive language program is radically different from the part-time model.  Students spend a minimum of five hours in class each day, five days per week which allows them to quickly learn English - learning that would take years in other part-time programs. Within a few short months in Riverside’s intensive program, students acquire the knowledge and skills to communicate confidently in English.   In addition to English skills, students gain job readiness and computer literacy taking steps toward economic self-sufficiency.

The Riverside Language Program has been one of the most effective organizations for nearly forty years to aid in English language learning and assimilation of immigrants to be self-sufficient, productive and participatory citizens.

Abdulla is just one example.
Abdulla came as a refugee from Syria in February 2017.  Abdulla, fluent in Arabic and Turkish, knew very little English and had attended school only through 9th grade in Syria.  He enrolled in Riverside’s level one class and quickly advanced from level to level. After three months, he became proficient enough to secure a job at a local Manhattan bakery as a porter, packing boxes of baked goods for shipment.  By spring of 2018, Abdulla started studying for the GED and had been promoted to a cookie baker. Just last week, he started working on the front counter.   These small victories might not mean much to some, but for Abdulla, they have made a huge difference in his ability to support his family, cover rent, and put food on the table.

We are at a critical moment.  Abdulla was able to enroll in a full-time, quality English language program that allowed him to learn English quickly and successfully secure a job with growth potential.   Hundreds of others, however, are not so fortunate.  Cuts in federal funding will force Riverside to turn away immigrants who come to America in search of safety and security.

You can make a difference. Your generous contribution will help the Riverside Language Program continue its high-quality language program, vocational services, and career counseling.
