On November 9th, our magical little school on the hill was overrun by flames in the Woolsey Fire.  We suffered terrible structural damage, and our community is left to rebuild.  Our school is a special place- a small community that has always valued the whole child, where families gather and form lifelong friendships, and where every student always knows they are loved.

The devastation our community feels right now is overwhelming.  Ilan Ramon Day School has never been about buildings.  Our families never chose our school because we had the fanciest facilities.  We know that our heart and soul is still strong- that brick and mortar is not what has ever been  the most important thing to our community.  Yet still, our children need brick and mortar.  We need a quick turnaround of cash in order to ensure that our kids can come to school uninterrupted, in a facility that is safe and welcoming.

We are already so grateful to our village of families, to our community at large, and to the broader cities that surround us for all of their love and support.  We hope you’ll consider helping us rebuild.

Our Community gathered together for Havdallah to begin the process of healing and rebuilding.

We continue to be inspired by the generosity shown to us. These last few days have been very busy up on campus. The remediation team is hard at work and has begun the process of cleaning all of the classroom spaces. They have begun pulling up the carpeting, removing the ceiling tiles and cleaning the books and toys that are in the classrooms. They have also begun to power wash portions of campus, so once a building is cleaned we will not track any contaminants back into the rooms.

This week we are hopeful that the temporary power will be installed and some additional debris removal (wood chips, sand, etc...) and landscaping will begin. We will be rebuilding the fence along the freeway in the coming days, and you soon you will notice temporary fencing to enclose portions of the campus.

The weeks ahead will be busy and we will be sure to keep everyone posted of our milestones as they occur.

We are thankful for your donations and appreciate the continued and much needed support to help bridge the gap between what insurance covers and added expenses. We are committed to rebuilding and returning to our beloved campus, stronger then ever.

Thank you

The last 10 days have been very busy for us. We resumed classes at our temporary site and the children are all enjoying being back in class learning and spending time with their teachers and friends. A special thank you to Temple Etz Chaim for the kindness and generosity that they have shown by opening up your doors and welcoming our community in.

While we have been settling in, work has been progressing on our campus. We have had all of the debris from the damaged buildings removed and water to campus has been fully restored.

In advance of the rains over the past several days, we took measures to protect the campus both from flooding and from debris.

The process of returning to campus will continue this week as we turn our attention to the insides of the classrooms. We are also working on new campus fencing and on restoring power that has been out since the fires.

There is much to be done and we are working diligently to ensure that we can return to campus in the new year.

Thank you for your support of our rebuilding process. With you continued support we will rebuild and will come out stronger as a school and as a community.

Please continue to share our story and support our small but mighty Ilan Ramon Day School community.

As we begin the cleanup process, we are fortunate to have insurance to cover many aspects of the rebuilding process. What we are learning is that this takes time, is costly and has limits. It is our overriding goal to minimize the disruption to our students and our families. We have an immediate need for financial support.

We are working with an industrial hygenist, loss mitigation company, clean-up crews and various local Jewish organizations on what is salvageable and what will need to be replaced. We are also finalizing a plan for temporary housing for the school to operate from. As we move through this process, we will need significant and  immediate funds to replace a great deal of what is in the classrooms, and while buildings remain standing and appear to be untouched, the contents have been affected by the smoke and may not be able to continue to be used by the students. While desks and chairs can be cleaned and sanitized - so many of the items that children use daily from textbooks, workbooks, papers, school supplies, toys, learning tools, etc. will not be able to be.

We are already so grateful to our village of families, to our community at large, and to the broader cities that surround us for all of their love and support.  We hope you’ll consider supporting us and helping us rebuild.
