Become a Co-Publisher of "Borders", a Special Issue of Tiferet Journal

For 14 years, we have been building a community of writers and readers who share a common ideal – that together we can foster a more tolerant, empathetic and peaceful world through the written word.

Now we are reaching out to our community – and welcoming new advocates to our community – by asking for your help in publishing a special edition of the Tiferet Journal entitled "Borders."  Your donation will also help to support readings, writing workshops and additional activities fostering interfaith and multi-cultural dialogue.

In this issue, we will focus on breaking down walls, and crossing borders of culture, faith, gender, and spiritual beliefs to promote understanding, compassion and cross-cultural connections.

My decision to publish a magazine called Tiferet came about as one of the ordinary miracles that make up our lives.  At a time when I belonged to an interfaith spiritual community and was studying Integrated Kabbalistic Healing, I met another writer who believed, as I did, that this was the perfect time to publish a magazine focused on the intersection of literature and spirituality.

As a poet and prose writer, and someone raised by a Jewish father and Christian mother, I felt I had always straddled two worlds.  I felt that we needed a way to bring people together, to connect people through the written word.   I  wanted to help give other writers a place to express their voices -- writers from diverse cultures and faith backgrounds.  I wanted to help spread the Word (in all its manifestations) and help foster tolerance and peace through literature and art.

Tiferet is a Hebrew word that, in my opinion, describes a state from which true creativity arises. I think of it as being similar to the razor’s edge envisioned by Somerset Maugham—a balancing of heaven and earth, good and evil, opposing forces that don’t usually reconcile. On the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, Tiferet is a stable center where the physical and spiritual realms meet.

It can be no accident that the Word holds such significance in many world religions and spiritual practices.  In the beginning was the Word” proclaims John 1:1 in the New Testament. According to Jewish mysticism, letters themselves have special powers. Those who practice Siddha Yoga worship the goddess Matrika, the sacred power behind every sound and every letter. And, as Nobel Peace Prize winner, Shirin Ebadi, points out, the first sermon in Islam begins with the word, “Recite!”… and, she went on to say, ”The Koran swears by the pen and what it writes."

The mission of Tiferet Journal is to help reveal Spirit, in all its manifestations, through the Written Word.  We publish writing from authors of many faiths, even non-traditional ones.

My hope is that Tiferet will indeed help foster cultural pluralism… help us all in our own search for and communion with divinity… and be a stable center within our modern lives, a place where the flames of creativity burn brightly.

We’ve lost money every year we’ve published. We aren’t affiliated with a university or other artistic institution that provides funding.

I was about ready to close the magazine down a few years ago.  But when our current administration took office,  and I saw what was happening to our country, I thought “Now is not the time to close.  Now is the time to extend our reach and audience…”

And so we’ve continued. I would have hoped this country and the world would have grown less rather than more divisive but this is not the case.  But I, along with the editors and writers I collaborate with, and the readers and subscribers who support us, continue to be dedicated to our ideal of crossing borders and uniting us.

It is very important to me as a person to understand where I project my own flaws and weaknesses onto another person. To not always blame “the other.” I think if each of us learned to do this, we would live in a better world. I abhor labeling people or lumping them into categories. My wish is that Tiferet Journal can continue to be a place where writers and readers can see that “the other” is indeed “like me.”

May you find sustenance—spiritual, emotional, literary—in our community.

Thank you for your donation as a co-creator and co-publisher of this important issue.  Your donation will help pay for our production, printing, distribution and mailing costs for the "Borders" issue, as well as help pay for increasing our circulation and helping to promote our writers and journal through readings and writing workshops, and other events.

Funds will be withdrawn every two weeks by the publisher and go into an account that pays for all Tiferet Journal expenses.  If any funds are raised beyond our goal, they will be invested in promoting our journal to university libraries and new audiences, as well as towards production costs for future issues.

You can choose to receive a gift for your donation or you can choose for us to donate 5% as a gift to the ACLU Immigrants Rights Fund.
