Help our project on RJ and Theater

What happens when a PhD candidate in Criminal Law, working on the "restorative treatment of criminality" meets a theater director?? Something really special!!!

Indeed, I come from Greece, the birthplace of Theater, but I do my law studies in France. Last summer, I had to travel from Athens to Milan, to assist in the international summer school of the European Forum for Restorative Justice, on the topic of "RJ and serious crimes". I had so much enthusiasm for this event! Once I arrived in Milan I had the pleasure to meet another Greek passenger, waiting next to me the same train. His name is Evdokimos Tsolakidis, and as a drama teacher, he came as well to Milan to teach in a theater summer school!

After this really interesting meeting, we decided to collaborate on RJ and Theater!!

Our really interesting discussion on August 2017, inspired me to write the article " Ancient Greek Tragedies in the light og Restorative Justice", published the same year by the European Forum for Restorative Justice, in a booklet entitled "Restorative Imagination: Artistic Pathways". But of course, I knew that it was not over!

In collaboration with Evdokimos, that I thank so much once again for all his help and contribution to all this, we decided to animate a workshop on RJ and Theater (entitled "the theatricality of human drama and RJ") during the European Forum for Restorative Justice International Conference that will take place on June 2018 in Tirana (Albany).

Our workshop will have three parts, the first and the third one will be turned into movies. And here is that we really need your help. All people involved are not going to be paid, but money is necessary for editing, cameras, lights, sound etc. As an activist for RJ movement as well as a European Forum for Restorative Justice member, I have also the ambition to use this film in order to raise awareness on RJ, during the next International RJWeek. That is why, it is important to film it in a professional way.

What are the two movies are about?

Movie I: “Clytemnestra’s and Electra’s mediation”

The idea is to take two famous characters of Greek tragedies while keeping the data of their conflict situation, and to invite them in a restorative encounter (mediation). We will keep the theatricality of the situation, because this encounter will take place in front of the audience who will interact at some points with the two protagonists (kind of Forum theatre).

Who is who?

Clytemnestra

She was the wife of Agamemnon and queen of Mycenae in ancient Greek legend. Clytemnestra had held a grudge against her husband for agreeing to sacrifice their eldest daughter, Iphigenia, to Artemis so he could send his ships to fight in the Trojan War. Clytemnestra finally murdered Agamemnon and his lover Cassandra, a Trojan princess, whom he had taken as war prize following the sack of Troy.  She acted in collaboration with her own lover, Aegisthus.

Electra

Electra is one of the most popular mythological characters in tragedies. She is the main character in two Greek tragedies,” Electra” by Sophocles and “Electra” by Euripides. She was the daughter of King Agamemnon and Queen Clytemnestra. She and her brother Orestes plotted revenge against their mother Clytemnestra and stepfather Aegisthus for the murder of their father.

What happens when these two women (mother and daughter) meet in the frame of a restorative encounter with the presence of a mediator? Clytemnestra is the killer of victim’s father and at the same time the victim’s mother. How these two women's life is now, after this horrible offense?

Movie II: "Terrorist's-mother's mediation"

An ex-terrorist meet the mother of a 8years old boy that he killed by accident 20 years ago. The mediation takes places at the rooftop of a building in Athens...

Both movies will be filmed in Greece, with the students of the "Theater of Changes".

The filming will take place on 12 and 13 May 2018 in Athens, and we would be so grateful if you could contribute to its realization.

I would like to thank all of you in advance and I am sure that you will love the result of this "marriage of the modern with the classic" in order to promote humanity and Justice!

Thank you a lot.
