As a Title 1 charter school in Ogden, we are excited to be one of the few schools with a garden in our area.
Over the last 6 years, we have grown from 3 garden boxes to an large plot, with 3 fruit trees, 10 garden boxes, a raspberry patch, and a garden snake that likes to occasionally scare the garden coordinator.
We use the school garden to educate around 600 students on the importance of healthy eating and creating a connection to the Earth. When we aren’t in the garden, we have a program called Harvest of the Month. Here we pick a fruit or vegetable for the month and the children get to learn more about it and try a sample in the classroom. The leadership class at the junior high teaches our these classes and is involved in the prep and creating the PowerPoint for the program. Annually, it costs $300 to run the Harvest of the Month program.
We would love to use the rest of the money raised to build an area for the students to sit while learning in the garden. We also need a wheelbarrow, some new tools, and buckets.
