On January 22, 2019 Rex Allred began his shift at Oneonta Fire & Rescue Service as a Firefighter/Paramedic.  While on duty Rex began to exhibit confusion and had a headache that had progressively gotten worse.  A MRI scan revealed the worst possible scenario, a Brain Tumor.  A short time later Rex had surgery to attempt to remove the brain tumor. The majority of the tumor was removed during surgery but microscopic cells remain that could not be removed. He will begin to receive radiation and chemotherapy as a treatment plan to attempt to manage the portion of the tumor that surgeons were unable to remove. Firefighters are exposed to toxic substances every single day they show up for work.  Too many firefighters are diagnosed with cancer every year.  These heroes are risking death every day to help all of us. Rex began his firefighting career in October of 2000. Rex has served the public for a large majority of his life through the fire service,  and also works as a Paramedic with Blount EMS Ambulance Service. This GoFundMe account was set up with the approval of the family to assist Rex in his battle against cancer and medical related/living expenses. 100% of the funds collected will go directly to the family. Rex has worked 48 hour shifts between Oneonta Fire and Rescue Service and Leeds Fire and Rescue for the past several years. An account has also been established at Hometown Bank in Oneonta, Alabama and donations can be made directly to the “Rex Allred Donation Account”. Please donate if you can and please share.

We are adding the following information at the request of GoFundMe to verify and ensure that all donations will go to Rex during this time of need. Josh Gibson and Jonathan Ledbetter work with Rex at Oneonta Fire & Rescue Service. Additionally, Josh Gibson is Rex's Nephew and is coordinating with Rex and his family on this account. Rex has been to sick to take care of the things that needed to be done and we are trying to do all we can to help. Josh has been named the beneficiary of this account and all funds withdrawn from GoFundMe will be deposited into the Rex Allred Account at Hometown Bank that was established to benefit Rex and his family. The only individuals that will have access to withdraw from that account are Rex and his wife Stephanie. All funds donated to the GoFundMe account or deposited directly into the account at hometown bank and will go to helping Rex receive treatments at UAB Hospital in Birmingham and the travel expense related to traveling back and forth. Rex has not been able to work since his initial diagnosis and we hope to relieve the stress of financial hardship so he can focus on healing. By having the funds deposited directly into this account established for Rex, He and Stephanie can go directly to the bank and withdraw money as needed to ensure Rex receives all the treatment and care that he needs.
