Help Neema Makene Study Eurythmy

Donation protected
Hello, I am Neema Makene from Tanzania. I am 21 years old and am trying to find the resources to study eurythmy, a movement art that improves the child’s ability to learn and supports their healthy development at all levels as they grow.

Children all over the world are benefiting from the strengthening that eurythmy brings, but there are currently no trained eurythmy teachers in Tanzania nor in all of East Africa.

Quality learning need not be a privilege of developed societies alone. “Hata sisi tunaweza” - this Swahili saying means: given a chance, we too can achieve it.

I would love to become a professional eurythmist and return to Tanzania to practice and bestow the advantages of this innovative learning tool to the wonderful children of this region as well.

I first learned about eurythmy as a student in kindergarten and primary school at Hekima Waldorf School in Dar es Salaam, where I am now a volunteer teaching assistant. I longed to go to school every day because of eurythmy, partly to enjoy the thrill of the movements and the wonderful art designed to enhance our learning. Back then eurythmy was taught by visiting or foreign teachers staying for short periods. I loved those sessions; they inspired me to see learning as so much fun. Looking back now, it is eurythmy that motivated me to become a teacher and make it a part of my life.

My childhood dream to be a teacher is partially realized, and returning to work at the same place of my inspiration, the memories are vivid. I see how eurythmy can transform children’s learning, and make the work of teaching itself satisfying and rewarding. It keeps the teacher and children focused and healthy physically and mentally. This priceless teaching tool should be indispensable in our part of the world where we face so many teaching and learning challenges.

If you are not familiar with eurythmy, it is an invaluable tool for learning enhancement, an effective therapy that supports healing, a means for increasing social awareness in groups, and it is a stunning art form. Its pedagogical elements are based on research into the positive effects of specific movements targeted to enhance child development through the school years. It is employed in education around the world, especially in Waldorf schools.

I applied and was accepted to the professional training at Eurythmy Spring Valley in Chestnut Ridge, New York, U.S.A. This school was recommended to me as a leading, English-speaking eurythmy training with international recognition.

To start my training, I will need $20,000 to cover tuition, travel, and living costs during the first year. The college has awarded me a grant of $2,900 to support my study costs. I am also being considered for work-study positions on campus to help me to cover some of my living costs. With a grant and a possible job confirmed, I now seek to develop a circle of supporters to help me cover the remaining costs of my training.

I am grateful to a dear family friend, Selma Steenhuisen, who is helping me to raise the money to attend the Eurythmy training through starting this go fund me project.  All funds raised will be sent to Selma’s bank account in Euros and used for the purpose to support my eurythmy training costs.

I hope that you will consider my project to bring the developmental and therapeutic benefits of eurythmy to East Africa, and that you will become a part of my support circle.

Further information about the training can be obtained from: Student Services Coordinator [email redacted] or from the website: www.eurythmy.org

Thank you,

Neema Makene
