Help needed to save lives and legs!

Hello Everyone, my name is Esme, I am a Dog Behaviour Consultant originally from the UK and now living in Sydney.

When I signed up for a volunteer work placement at a Dog Rescue centre in Tanzania, I was certain I would see many heartbreaking things but felt like I could also do some good. Now that I'm here, I am pleased to say I am able to do some good, but I see that they are in desperate need of help as all the best intention in the world does not finance surgeries, medical supplies, food and blankets - nothing really prepares you for seeing it firsthand.

For example, there is a beautiful girl called Tamuo, found along with her 8 puppies who has been brutally hacked at with a bush knife, she has more than 11 open gashes most of which have gone through the muscle to the bone.  She needs surgery and amputation. Why save this dog you might ask? Well apart from being severely underweight, beyond inhumanely treated and in a lot of pain, she continues to try and nurse her pups to the best of her ability (with our help) and has an inspiring spirit for life - and somehow still finds love to give us humans and takes great comfort in her daily pats. Please help  get her the amputation she desperately needs to make a fully recovery, be a good mum and a happy dog.

There are many individual stories I can tell you and will post in updates, but there just isn't enough space here. This is a small list of what your precious donations will be going to and I look forward to posting photos and videos so you can see what your "spare change" has dramatically changed:
·        Surgeries for deliberate hit and runs, broken and fracture bones from beatings, wounds and lost limbs from bush knife hackings.
·        Medication and supplies for dogs so badly covered in mange they can barely move (the results can be seen in as little as two weeks, amazing)
·        Blankets and Jägermeister bottles! The empty bottles we can get from locals for a small donation (nothing is free in Tanzania!) and they actually hold the heat better that conventional water bottles!!! Our puppies love to stay warm off the concreate and wet mud.
·        Big one! Spay/neuter and vaccine clinics - they provide these free to the community utilising vets from overseas willing to help out at the end of or beginning of their safari holidays, but we need the equipment and vaccines (you will save the kids too by default! 1000's of children die from rabies every year here in Tanzania alone, most resulting from dog bites)
·        Education, education, education!!! We go to schools and communities and teach animal welfare and dog approach and handling (many people still believe and practice throwing rocks at dogs to:
a.      Make them aggressive and "protect" you or
b.      To scare them or wound them so they don't attack you (do you see the conflict of interest!?)
·        Leashes/collars - they love to walk with our volunteers and get socialised so we can get them to new and loving forever homes!
·        Fencing - so mainly the scallywag teenagers don't get into the quarantine or recovery areas.
This is to name but a few…

The dogs get rehomed in Germany, France, America and the UK as well as locally here in Tanzania! And hopefully someday soon in Australia! They really are fantastic dogs with endless love to give and are truly thankful for the smallest act of kindness.

Mbwa Africa are doing incredible work under very difficult conditions - spaying animals, providing medical assistance, food, shelter and of course as much love as they can! Please help me support them.  I am here on the ground to see exactly where every penny of your kind donations go and can't wait to post the amazing results it will achieve!

There are so many photos and stories to choose from and you are limited to how many you can post here - but I will find a way to post somewhere else (maybe in updates) or personally email them to you. Some of the photos are graphic and disturbing but when you see the dogs after their recovery and their love for life you will understand the difference generous donations can make.  Any assistance you can provide, no matter how small, will go a long way to helping them make a difference.

Even if you cannot support them financially, I encourage you to go the "Mbwa Wa Africa - Animal Rescue and Kennels" website (http://mbwa-wa-africa.org ) to find out more about the wonderful people who run this organisation and the amazing difference they make.

Or come and volunteer! They would love to have you!

A million thankyou’s advance!
