Help My Students Enjoy Reading

I have the great privilege of teaching 33 intelligent and ambitious fourth graders at Lincoln Elementary School in Richmond, California. In my classroom I constantly try to instill the importance of reading. My students have made some excellent growth in reading but I inherited a classroom library that was in disarray, which I proceeded to organize before the start of the school year. However, throughout the course of the year I have come to realize that these books are extremely outdated and do not hold the interest of my students. Consequently, my students have very little interest in reading the books in my classroom library--and to be honest--I do not blame them. The books are mostly from the 1980s and 1990s and my students cannot relate to the books at all.

Unfortunately, my students are not allowed to bring their library books home. Additionally, many of my students do not have access to books to read at home. As a result, my students are not reading as much as they would like. They would love your help!
