Help Mom of French Jogger Arrested

The story of the teenage jogger arrested on the beach after accidentally straying slightly into US territory was reported worldwide but what the stories do NOT mention is the emotional and  financial pressure that this Trump-inspired "zero tolerance" detention put on her mother, a single parent, and very good friend of mine.

YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT "FOR-PROFIT" PRISONS.   The Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma is run by GEO Group, a company that runs the prison to make money.  For Christiane to phone her daughter or vice versa, they both had to buy & re-charge expensive phone cards with exorbitant per-minute charges.  Christiane paid hundred of dollars for these cards.  It's hard to imagine: in the USA, it's legal to hold children hostage & charge their parents to talk to them!  PS:  Even the state of Washington is suing GEO.: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/geo-group-wants-lawsuits-tossed-over-paying-higher-wages-to-immigrants-held-at-northwest-detention-center/

BACKSTORY:   Single mother Christiane Ferne had already been pushed to the edge financially (before this even happened) by the extra costs of recently immigrating to Canada, the very high cost of living in Metro Vancouver & educating her 2 daughters.  (Health & other expenses that Canadians get free are not available until she gets Landed Immigrant status.)   After daughter Cedella was incarcerated in Tacoma WA, 200 km away, Christiane had to pay for travel there and then motels, meals & living expenses, all the while losing income from her job.  In addition, there were visits to lawyers and other consultants.  Plus a massive amount of worry, of course.

THE INCIDENT:   The news video reports the basic story.  The I.C.E. agents said that people have inadvertently crossed the poorly-marked beach border for years and, when clearly accidental & inadvertent, the border guards just told the people to go back.  But they said that now, with Trump, they had to arrest her!  Zero Tolerance for criminals is one thing, but this looks more like "Zero Common Sense" since Cedella was only a few feet inside the border and had already turned around to go back!

UPDATE:   A few days ago, Christiane just lost her job without notice!   Since she entered Canada on a work visa, she's NOT permitted to just take any other job without going through the lengthy approval process.  But her emergency funds were exhausted by Cedella's arrest.   Meanwhile, she has $2,000 in monthly expenses and August rent fast approaching.  She's in trouble!

Please show that you do NOT agree with Trump's "zero-common-sense" border approach & the damage it does to families.   If you can make a small donation of a few dollars, she and her children can keep their Canadian dream alive.  At the very least, please SHARE this story so more people learn of GEO Corp & it's for-profit abuses!

CAMPAIGN UPDATE. The May arrest of Christiane's daughter made the worldwide news & revealed that "zero tolerance" at the border is applied to mean "zero common sense" by United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the largest federal law enforcement agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security. It also revealed abuses in the US prisons-for-profit system. I wanted to help Christiane and also bring these abuses to light.

So, what has been happening? Well, for the last 5 months, Christiane has literally been working 7 days/week to make ends meet. How she can keep it up, I don't know, and it worries me.

Christiane said that with other people in the world being worse off, she didn't feel justified to continue receiving your generous donations so I backed off on aggressively promoting this campaign. I wish I could convince her that good people WANT to show they care, and that each donation is a symbol of solidarity and encouragement. Your donations say, "Don't give up. We're with you." I thank you for that.

One thing I didn't expect was that there would be only a few very generous donors. Your generosity humbled me, and inspired me. Going forward, instead of a few people contributing very generously, I'm hoping that small individual donations of a few dollars should add up to $1,000. Please share this campaign on your Facebook and via email. Thanks again to all.

Hello friends. I'm going to ask you again to SHARE this on FB and via email.

The GoFundMe I created for Christiane reveals abuses in the US prisons-for-profit system and the Trump-ordered "zero tolerance" border policy that need to become widely known. I've been humbled by the generosity of a few individual donors but my intention was to have this be widely disseminated so that small donations of a few dollars would add up. Please help me to get the word out. Thanks.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I'm M Markus Harrison, a resident of White Rock, BC, and manager of the GoFundMe campaign for my close personal friend Christiane Ferne, the mother of French jogger Cedella Roman who was arrested in May 2018 on Blaine side of the White Rock beach and held in prison for 15 days. This was featured on CBC news & subsequently picked up worldwide.

As described in my GoFundMe campaign write-up, the newsworthy aspect to follow-up with this story is that GEO Corp, who run the Tacoma Northwest Detention Centre as a prison-for-profit under contract with the US Dept. Homeland Security, are effectively EXTORTING money from the detainees' families by charging them exorbitant rates to talk on the phone. The state of Washington is already suing Geo for the slave wages issue (QV link in campaign write-up) but this is new. I think this is something readers would be interested in knowing. Naturally, if a link or mention to my GoFundMe campaign can be included in your reportage, fantastic.

As the guards reportedly said to Cedella when they arrested her, this wouldn't have happened pre-Trump but now it’s “zero tolerance”. My opinion is that "zero tolerance" is being implemented as "zero common sense". I’m hoping that you agree in your editorials. There needs to be a fence going into the water (versus an open beach) if people will be arrested and jailed like that.

I should mention that Christiane was mortified to be seen as asking for money but my position is that, (i) I'm asking on her behalf and pride is out of place when she is jobless and her August rent will soon be due, (ii) people are surprisingly empathetic, generous and happy to give to anything they judge worthy; this isn’t ‘begging’, and (iii) I believe this is NEWSWORTHY. After all, the original arrest went worldwide, going on CBC & French national TV, BBC, CNN, etc etc as far away as Hindustan Times! The follow up news is the prison-for-profit extortion angle. If it goes viral, GEO will come under pressure to reign in such abuses, or at least not jack up the rates even higher!

SUMMARY: I’m not doing this just for Christiane. I’m doing it for the thousands of people in similar circumstances who don’t have a voice. It’s not right to profit from families in torment.

Thanks in advance for any coverage or any suggestions you may have. To substantiate my info, you may want to follow-up with Christiane at REDACTED.

M Markus Harrison
