Hi,
My name is Nithya Caleb, living in Toronto. I'm a survivor of intimate partner violence. From religious to financial, I have suffered a lot of abuse and emotional trauma when married.
Background
In those years, there have been many many times I've frozen with fear, literally sick with worry about how he will react and what I must do to ensure there's no fight. Most of my energy was spent on containment, containing his anger, containing the fight so my son doesn't get hurt, and so forth. There have been days when I've begged the Earth to swallow me. Yet, I breathed, took one step at a time, and lived determined to be present for my child and myself.
Assault
When I finally got the courage to leave this state, I got sexually assaulted! Another trauma added to an already traumatized body and mind!
I left my 10-year marriage in June 2017. I have an 8-year-old child, who is an absolute delight. I've been managing my affairs pretty well.
But now I need your help...
Why I need your help
I have pressed charges against my assaulter and am getting ready to testify in the criminal court. The bar of evidence is high in these cases. I need to hire a lawyer who can represent me and prepare me for trial.
I'm also fighting in the family court for sole custody of my child.
I am deeply concerned about my son's emotional safety. The father has been coaching and manipulating him, and emotionally harming him. This has broken the bond between me and the child.
I need to provide the court with hard evidence and need to mount a robust legal campaign. All of this needs money, which I don't have as I'm a low-income, single mom with no child support (Arrears amount $3500).
Legal fee
I am at this point, it is clear I am in court for the long haul. My son's future is on the line, so I'm determined to fight until the very end. It is well-known that legal expenses are very high in Toronto. Average hourly cost is around $350. As my lawyer says, "even lawyers cannot afford lawyers."
