The New School is moving from one acre in the city to 25 acres in the country – three miles away. We are renovating a Finnish immigrant's hand-build farmhouse. The whimsical, rambling building is at the center of a 25-acre wood and working farm.
We are asking for help with the expense of converting the property from “residential use” to an “educational facility” because the current county code regards “living” and “learning” as separate things. We are reviving the working farm with chickens, goats, and other animals for the children to care for and play with. The students will also bear a large part in managing the woods, the pond, and the wildlife on the property.
Thinking comes from and is made straight by doing. Reading should remind one of things already done, rather than spinning cobwebs of words which muddle the imagination and delude reason.
Please contribute to the tradition of children playing and exploring out of doors, as an integral part of grounded education and happy childhood.
